Took my 70 RR out shut it off and it won't turn over. got it running by jumping the starter relay on the firewall with the key on and drove it home. next several times starts fine but then it fails again. replaced relay still doesn't start. got a new neutral safety switch but its not too easy to remove so I plug in the new one, push in the detent to test and it still doesn't start. I'm assuming that manually pushing in switch should complete circuit and since it still doesn't start the original, still installed NS switch is not the problem. I've got a FSM but I'm electrically challenged and running out of cheap parts to replace. suggestions? TIA Greg

Unless I'm mistaken, the center prong on trans switch needs to ground to rooster comb to enable startup. Thought the 2 outers were for backup lamps. Don't condemn the ign switch just yet.

make a jumper wire with alligator clips on each end. jump from the large starter relay "batt" terminal to the male "ign" small terminal next to it (the male terminal not the yellow wire female connector that's plugged into it) & see if it cranks right then as is no key needed. if yes seperate/clean the bulkhead & retry. If it did when jumped but now still no go check the ign switch connector. If jumping in the beginning is a no go plug the yellow wire back in & take the jumper & ground the male "grn" terminal on the starter relay to ground & see if it will crank with the key. If yes then the neutral safety switch (NSS) ain't being grounded either at the trans (auto) or the clutch pedal (stick) or in that wire somewhere intransit between the starter relay and the NSS. You can fix it or permanently ground it just be aware that it will negate the safety feature of it only being able to be cranked/started in park/nuetral & it will start in gear now

Easiest way to check the neutral saftey switch is to hold the key in the start position and move the shifter from park to neutral slowly to see if the engine turns over. If it does then you need to readjust the shifter linkage. You can't test the NSS by pushing in the button. The button must be grounded to work. Pushing the button in can test the back up lights.

Thanks all for the excellent info, went thru and double checked all connections and I'm back in business. There are two brown wires and I had the wrong one plugged in on reassembly. the detailed explanations made it easy to figure out. Appreciate it, Greg
