I just replaced my head gaskets in my charger (440) started it up didn't let it run for to long ( about 30-60 seconds ) had excellent oil pressure put noticed some ticking!?!?!? replaced both Header gaskets when head gaskets were done and both collector gaskets. Never had this ticking before. So anyways i pulled off my valve covers and i noticed this. What looks to be what i think ( Im no professional engine builder i may add but i do know the basics!) anyways what looks to be a bad rocker to valve alignment! is this my ticking maybe. or if not what is. bad lifter, push rod or rocker maybe. idk. Also should i just get a nice set of roller rockers & fancy push rods. idk if this will help i got that mopar purple shaft cam. I took some pictures!! [image] [/image] [image] [/image]

Right. you have the rocker arms in the wrong spots. They need to be switched. If you look close, you will see that the rocker arms are offset to the left or right. In the ones in your top photo, the one on the right (intake) needs to be switched with the one on the left (exhaust). In the bottom photo, you need to do the same but it's intake on left and exhaust on right. Do this with all that are misaligned and you should be good to go. Of course, this may not be the only reason for the ticking noise. These rocker/lifter/pushrod setups are non-adjustable and are sensitive to head gasket thickness. If you installed a head gasket a lot thicker or thinner than what was on there, you may have a condition now where the lifter preload is too much or too little. Too little may cause lifter noise. Too much may cause binding and possibly a bent pushrod(s), but not necessarily a ticking noise...until after the pushrods have been bent...

I agree. You want the small oiling holes where the oil comes out at each rocker on the bottom side of the shaft to be slightly offset toward the valve side.

Thank you for the advide everyone!! @bobs66440 I did go from a stock thin 440 head gasket to a much thicker ROL Headgasket. thats probably a problem then im guessing.

It's possible, but not necessarily definite. It depends on how much preload you had before and how much different the new gaskets are than the old ones. Check the lifter preload. When each lifter is on the BASE of the cam lobe, the preload should be between .020"-.040" (with the Comp lifters I'm using anyway). Some (including myself) run more without a problem (I have between .050"-.060"), but that's not the recommendation.
A quick way to see if it's definitely WAY too little is, get each lifter at the base of each cam lobe and spin/jiggle the pushrod and rocker arms. If you can detect noticeable up/down motion, like it's loose with no load, then you have found a potential noise (you will be able to move it side to side pretty easy, but there should be NO up/down clearance). You can also visually inspect the lifter plunger to see if it's depressed off the snap ring that holds it in or not, but that would require removing the intake.

I think adjustable rockers are best, just like your thinking. Sure you have the rockers mixed up, but I don't think that's why it's ticking.
You already stated what you might think the problem may be and I agree you you. The thicker head gaskets may require longer pushrods or better yet adj rockers. I would straighten out the rockers and bolt it back on and take a closer look at pre load like what was suggested above and go from there. Start it if it still ticks, then...

Roller rockers are going to be a waste of money for you in my opinion. Yes you will get the benefit of correct rocker arm ratio compared to the stock stamped steel rocker but it's not as simple as just buying rockers, you'll also need new pushrods and more than likely good hardened rocker shafts. A kit like the Comp pro Magnums are about $500-$600 plus pushrods.
Skip looking at cheap chinese junk rockers ... remember you buy cheap chinese junk, you get cheap chinese junk. I'd post a link to a thread about what happened to one person, but I've been told that I'll get banned if I do, so I'll just leave it at that.
Look for a good use set of Ductile Iron rockers if you want to go to adjustable rockers .
I have a question , why did you switch to a thicker head gasket , to lower your compression ?
