Slowly making progress with the install of my new 540 in the Dart Sport. Today I adjusted the shifter cabe and discovered that I have no park. Disconnected the cable and manually moved the lever on the trans and still nothing. The trans is a 727 with a Tranzact transbrake valve body. What would cause this and can it be fixed without pulling the trans ? Thanks,

Randy

Some of the old time race trans builders use to leave the parking gears off the output shafts and the park activator rods off of the valve bodies I hope not, who did your trans? Call them and ask them why it doesn't work

Randy, sounds like the park rod missed the parking
paw or the rod isnt there... you can drop the pan
and you will need to drop the VB... but its fixable
in the car

Thanks Guys. I had a friend do the trans and have a call it to him. I'm glad I caught it before I put the fluid in.

Dang!!!..we were just a half hour,or less, from hearing that Bad Boy 540 rumblin'! YES!..glad the trans fluid wasn't added! Sounds like it should be a simple enough fix...seeing the trans doesn't have to be dropped out! Hope to hear some "music"(LOUD) early this week!

If you're doing an initial startup you want it in Neutral, not Park.

The Park problem might be a misplaced park rod, sometimes the rod gets jammed under the snap ring and pawl in the tailhousing instead of being centered in the opening...see pic below.

Thanks for the picture,John! Randy was just making sure he had PARK..after connecting the shifter cable to the trans lever. Sounds like a pretty easy fix,if just dropping the valve body down.

If that turns out to be the problem, re-clock the snap ring as far clockwise as it will go...that way the bottom ear of the snap ring will prevent the rod from dropping down into the gap.

if the rod happens to be in there then it might be for a 904 as they are different length than the 727 rod's,,,just sayin'

Good thought, the wrong park rod causes lots of problems...the length is about the same but the bend is different. 727 on the bottom in pic below.

Thanks for they help and the pictures, especially the one of the window that the rod runs through. It really helped me understand what my builder was describing to me. I pulled the pan yesterday afternoon and called my builder. He mentioned that he could possibly have put the 904 rod in by mistake. Turns out there was no rod installed. He's a pretty busy guy and mistakes happen. Just glad it wasn't full of fluid yet!

Thanks Randy! Yeah, pretty excited. Hopefully can make it to Norwalk for the classic, but still have some loose ends to finish up.
