Im working on my First dana 60 It had a strange noises coming from it. I took the cover off of it and found the carrier slopping back and forth almost a 1/4 inch.

I figured diferrential bearings for sure Well I dropped the carrier and sure enough the ring gear side bearing was bad.

Now the bad part, the same bearing race ground a 3/16 groove into the housing adding to the slop of the differential.

Even with a new bearing, with that race groove in the housing it wont be fixed.

How can I fix this?? Different housing?, can it be machined, or just a whole nother complete rear end?? Thanks mike

Thake it to a machinist to have it repaired or just get a different rearend . Besides needing the bearings its most likely the ring and pinion are worn and are not any good anymore..

I am truckless..

That is a common problem.

Most good differential shops have a special tool to re-machine the carrier bearing thrust surface.

Check with local shops that work on 4 x 4 rears.

Boy, I dont know if we have any good 4x4 shops around here. I have to look though.

Another question?? How does this carrier adjust?? I saw no provision for that. I also saw no shims either. It looks like this rear was just plopped in.

The 8.75, 8.25 and others have the bearing adjuster plates to move it back and forth. Im thinking there has to be shims that are utilized and this rear just didnt need any, I guess Thanks for your quick answers

This rear has a 3.54 gear and has a clutch pack, but the axel slips with about 10# of torque. I thought it was a open rear until I saw the clutch packs.

Whats involved in fixing that?? Thanks mike

All of the original OEM Dana 60 I've seen had shims on the pinion and carrier, none of them had adjusters like the modern Mopar corporate rear ends have As far as fixing the posi units DR DIff has what you need, I believe At least he did for what I needed earlier this year to rebuild one and convert it from 18 spline to 35 spline, axles, posi clutch and side gear kit

Shims go under the carrier bearings to control preload and backlash.

Sounds like you need also need a new clutch pack.
