Ive noticed that my stuff runs warmer on the hwy than in town, or even at idle.
It doesnt run alot warmer, 10 degrees at most. At idle and in town it will run 170ish, hwy it goes a hair over 180.
I have dual fans from a concorde/intrepid. Not ideal, planning on a mercedes fan in the near future. If I turn off the fans on the hwy, the motor heats up more.
My cooling system: Dual electric fans Griffin 2 row rad Milodon HV pump I also have the accesories turning as fast as possible, to get the most amps at idle for fans.
I wonder if the water is pushing through the rad too fast???
AFR at cruise is pretty fat, 11.5. Dont think that would cause a heating issue?
Any ideas?

So whats the problem? I bet there are a lot of people on this board that would love for their cars to stay that cool while driving.

You must be running a 160 thermostat. Run a 180 one. like you should, and you wont notice this non problem anymore. Running an engine too cool is bad for mileage and oil life.

Then its not opening at 180 like it should, its obviously opening closer to 170, a thermostat's job is to maintain a min. operating temp.

I wouldn't worry about it unless the temp continues to climb with speed. I bet your radiator is fine. People jump to the faulty radiator conclusion if they haven't had much experience with shrouded electric fans.
Chances are you've got too tight of a fan shroud. It's trapping air and not allowing it to flow through the shroud. The fans seem to be able to move fast enough to keep air moving through them at speed but not fast enough to evacuate the full volume of the shroud. A quick fix would be to cut some holes in flat areas of the shroud. Cover them with flaps of rubber or hinged plastic hanging from the back of the shroud above the hole. At low speed the fans will draw the flaps closed. At high speed the air trapped behind the shroud will escape through the shroud.
I had the same problem when I was running the Maxima fans on the hot rod. Adding the flaps helped cool it down on the highway and did not change the low speed cooling.

the fact that your temp rises when you turn off the fans on the highway suggests the airflow is a bit restricted but you are NOT overheating & as said you are too cool (at slower speeds) which drastically increases eng wear. I'd replace the stat with another 180 in case this one is defective & if not then a 185 or 195 to keep the temp at 180 minimum as said. I believe you want the water speed to be as fast as possible as long as the pump ain't cavitating which is not the issue here

The fans block airflow through the radiator.look how much of the front area the fans block.

Could be running too lean also. Main circuit.
This is always my first thought, but he's running electric fans with non stock shroud. I'm thinking Feets is offering some good advise since he's been there with those electric fans and shrouds.
The the guy who responded first to the OP poster, yes they can stay cool even on a hot day idling for like a 1/2 hour at 5 PM in traffic. Like my car did Thurs afternoon(it was still hot on Thurs) up in Heath at the Mopar nationals. There's construction up there and the traffic was backed up for like a 1/2 mile or more and we sat in traffic for close to a hour going both ways. My 474 camed 340 idled all that time with the AC cranking in my black car and it never went past 3/4 on the stock gauge. It usually runs at 1/3 or so but when it get's hot out and it idles it goes to 3/4 and stays there, I can watch my theremostat open and close on my temp gauge too. As soon as we get moving it drops right away. My motor is anything but stock, but my cooling system is completely stock all the way down to the radiator and it works. My After all that we went to through the McD's drive through on a busy Fri afternoon at 5 PM. I hardly ever watch the gauge anymore.

fan is worthless after 25 to 30 mph....natural air flow takes over....sounds like the car is lean as it "should" be its coolest when running down the road or the waterpump (high volume?) is pumping water too fast that it doesn't cool properly at highway speeds
thats a myth

so a fan pulls more air than natural airflow at 55 mph....I think NOT
