Since this is a question, I will post it here. Is the best way to change a small bolt a-body 8.75 over to big bolt pattern to use 10" drums? Are they really getting scarce, or is there still a supply to be used? The fronts I'm not real worried about, aftermarket has them covered if I can't find used stuff. Just heard/read 10" stuff is getting hard to find and was wondering about other options.
Also the axles for the switch will probably be ordered from Dr. Diff. He seems to be the MAN.
Thanks!

Where did you hear the rumor about a lack of 10" drums? Most everything out there from 73 has 10" drums, cars and trucks use the same droms.

I am truckless..

Not sure where I read it. Fabo, maybe? It may not have been the drums as much as the backing plates for an 8.75? Or I'm completely wrong, which is fine, too!

That may be that 10" SBP drums are getting scarce. I'd get a set of BBP axles with tapered bearings with the offset for BBP brakes then as said a set of common BBP 10" brakes. Might be a slight increase in overall width which'll affect your rim offset needed/tire clearance so check that out also

If you want to try to keep the current A body brakes and just swap drums then that is the problem , the drums for that are not available anymore , if you switch to B/E 10" brakes , and the axle has that proper offset then you should be all set. Aftermarket axles for big blot conversion come that way , you have to ASK for them to be A body offset and then rework your drums .

Was planning on using B/E body stuff with the offset in the axles to keep things all nice and tidy. I must have either read something the wrong way or my memory isn't nearly what it used to be. What were we talking about again?

The original A body 8 3/4 came with 10x1 3/4 inch wide brakes on the rear, not 10x2.0 The axle flange to axle bearing spacing is different as well as the axle lengths from A,B, E and C bodys, A bodys are all by them selfs in length, not interchangable with the others You can use the early, pre 1971 B body axles, brake backing plates and have the axles cut down to fit into your A body 8 3/4 housing, stock axles may not have enough spline length to fit into the center sections correctly after shortening so custom after market axles may be needed the other option is to have your rear brake drums and axles driled for the big bolt pattern and use screw in studs or bolts I have done that way more than once

My plan is to find a set of brakes, then buy a set of Yukon or similar axles. I don't like the idea of redrilling things. It is not a must right now, that's why I am getting the research out of the way first.
