I am newbie here and have a problem with a 1973 360 engine. I bought this street rod a few months ago. It had been in storage since about 1987. First thing I do is change the oil and filter. Added four quarts and check the oil and it's showing full. I though maybe I didn't let it drain long enough. Changed the oil/filter again this week and same thing, four quarts and it shows full.

The dip stick part number is 3870265. When I looked up that number it shows 1976 to 1986 dip stick. Was the 1973 different? The stick measures 21 inches from the tip to the hub.

I am sure this motor should use 5 quarts with filter. Do I have the wrong dip stick?

not all dipstick tubes are the same length. you need the correct stick that matches the corresponding tube. also tubes are different depending on what year make and model vehicle the engine came out of. 3462049 is the part number for a 73 360 passenger car dipstick. assuming the engine did not come out of a truck. btw, the tube is 3418933. i may have a 73 360 stick around here somewhere if you need me to check

Pass car "center sump" right? If you dont run across the correct stick plus assuming the tube is the correct original one; on a level surface I'd add 4 qts to the pan/dont start it/let it settle/remark the stick

I don't think it's a truck motor. The sump is front/center, not in rear.
Guess I'll try to find the '73 stick and tube. In the mean time I going to
add the 5th quart and mark the stick.

Thank everyone for the help.

I am sure I'll be back for more help....

I should have a NOS stick and tube but if it is a street rod then maybe you could just get a matching chrome tube and stick from one of the aftermarket vendors.

The std length filters may not hold an exact qt depending on how picky you want to get
