Please help with alternator charging problems.

I have recently replaced the alternator, battery, and voltage regulator. I have double checked to make sure the power, two field wires and, ground wire are connected correctly. Everything seems to line up fine.

BUT the battery is not being charged. The battery runs at about 12.10 volts when i know it should be between 13 and 14 volts when charging correctly. The car also dies when i disconnect a the positive terminal. I am under the impression the car should be able to run under alternator power.

Is there something I am missing?

Maybe bypass the amp gauge.

or poor connection at firewall in from alt or out to bat.

two field wires

You've converted to the later flat reg & 2 field terminal alt? Either it's wired wrong or an open in the field wiring terminals. I would avoid disconnnecting the batt while it's running as that can spike the alt voltage & damage it. At a fast idle what is the voltage at the alt batt stud? Holler back with any info.

I did convert to the two field terminal type. At fast idle it runs at 12.06 volts. I have even done a continuity test to make sure all the wires have no broken connections.

I would check the alt wire conection with bulkhead and at the amp meter. Black wire goes into the bulkhead from the alt. goes under dash and conects to alt meter (or post outside), red wire goes from there through bulkhead to join up at sel. conector for battery charge. Run a volt meter at the alt post, the field wire conections, and the small red wire conected to the sel.

lets start with the simple first. What did you do to convert it?

I put in a Painless wiring harness about two years ago and have a 01-0153 alternator from oreillys. It was all charging fine up until a month ago. It sat for about 3 weeks and when i restarted it was no longer charging.

if it all worked before and suddenly stopped, then wiring is probably not the issue.
My bet is one of the new parts is bad.
you should take the alt back and have them test it. see if it reads good.
it would not be the first time a part was bad out of the box, or shortly out of the box.
if the alt tests good, take back the vr.

Take off both field wires from the alt. Jump either male alt field terminal to ground. With eng at a fast idle and your voltmeter connected to the alt batt stud then jump from the batt positive post to the other alt male field terminal for 3 seconds MAX & see (& post) what you get for voltage
