This fuel filter was found on my 98,000-mile 1969 383HP engine with Keystone clamps intact.

Sure looks like it!!

People should take note where the fuel filter is located... after the pump!

I would also agree that it's likely the original, looks like someone replaced the upper clamp to the carb (no surprise).

definitely seems original since it has the keystone clamps however, weren't the rubber lines and filter as well as the steel line installed after the engine assembly was painted? I find it weird that there seems to be engine paint on the lower part of the hose.

I know this is not about the fuel pump, but I thought the original pumps had a short hard line on the discharge side before the filter. Is that correct or did they come both ways? I see some original paint on the hose.

440 and hemi used the lower hard lines.

383 cars use as shown, note the angle the lower fitting exits the pump

For some reason I thought that filters were after the pump following a certain year, and before on others (say 67?)

I know '73 small blocks had it before the pump. Clearly outlined in the service manual..

Burdar- Was it that way originally? The lubrication and maintenace section of the 1973 service manual shows a picture (fig 25 of the chapter) with the words "fuel filter 318, 340 and 360 engines" and the filter is shown before the pump inlet.

Fine Lines list 2pcs lines from the pump to the carb 68-69 383 with AVS,also for 68-71 440 with AVS.

Yes, it was that way originally. The inlet side of the pump just has a nipple for the fuel hose from the main fuel line. The outlet side of the pump has a threaded connection. There is a short section of fuel line bent in a "U" shape...then the filter...then the line that goes up to the carb.

I have the U-shaped piece(threaded) as well. The service manual shows the filter between the frame rail line and the barbed inlet. I know the fuel line changed after '72. I wonder why the discrepency?

That's what I always thought, although the one in the pic sure looks factory installed, going by the factory type clamp on the outlet.

Your 383 does look original. I'm certainly no expert on '69 models, though. I know on '73's big blocks still have the filter after the pump, but with a small metal line coming out the pump then the filter.

So the service manual is wrong then? Anybody have any pics of an original unmolested '73 340?

I just know the fuel pump can't suck through a filter made for after the fuel pump, it don't matter what year, gas is gas.

Very few people understand gas and it characteristics. Got to know it to make big power.
