I've got a 727 in my 68 Barracuda behind a built 408, been a good trans for years but has never shifted right. Supposed to have a shift kit in it, barks the tires once in a while but usually pretty tame/mushy between gears. The trans shop that rebuilt it said that the lever on the trans should be all the way to the rear at WOT, and it is. I think I got hosed on the shift kit, any suggestions?

The throttle pressure lever should move immediately when the carb linkage comes off-idle NO slop before the lever starts to move.

You can drop the pan and increase the line pressure (to a point).

Are your bands adjusted correctly?

There are a few things to ask and for you to check.
Does the throttle linkage on the trans move freely? Does it alway return all the way forward at idle? How about the shift linkage, does it move freely, or is it binding? How tight/loose is the converter? Whe it shifts firm is it reved up or below the converter stall speed?

Linkage moves freely, right off Idle. Have no idea how the bands were adjusted, or about line pressure. Also, it shifts firm randomly once in a while at full throttle, but not very often.

There are a couple of things that can affect the shift firmness, a loose converter or a tall axle ratio (or both) will make the shift feel less firm.

3.91 Rear, 3,000 converter. Still good for a 12.64 on street tires, I just thought with that kind of power it should bark the tires in 2nd!
