before i get flamed , i've seached and read more post in the past 2 days about this and haven't found an answer. history - i have switched from a 1500 stall to a 2800 stall converter on a fairly decently built 440 B-body. the converter is a PTC and was built using a spec sheet and questions asked by them. the 1500 converter would 'lock' on right away but i could never get into my power band. the 2800 unit seems as though it's right (flashes good, fries my 15 inch wide Mickey's) but there is alot of slop from idle to about 2000rpms. i know absolutely nothing about automatics so the question is, is there an internal adjustment that can be made to decrease this 'slop'? there are several other members on here that use this converter and they all love it!

I'm having the same issue on a SB 727 / 2400 stall, waiting to see this answer

Oh yeah, it's a hybrid.....it burns gas and tires!

There is no adjustment , when you put the trans into Drive or low the rear clutch pack applies and you are in gear, the slop is the fluid coupling of the convertor .

enjoy ...

Not all converters are the same.
Talk to your converter guy.
Don't buy an off the self converter!
There are a couple of converter builders here who can answer this for you and build something better for you. ( it won't be a $100 converter either)

it was 500 and custom built.

You went from a relatively 'tight' stock converter to one with a much higher amount of 'slippage'. Its going to be annoying until you get used to it.

So if you do cough up the $$$ on a custom converter (which I did), what is the best way to judge/evaluate whether the place delivered?

In my example, I am supposed to have a 2800-3200 stall converter behind a decently built 360 motor (727 trans, 3.91 SG).

Car is finally ready to hit the street, so as I take some initial runs what do I look at to really figure out if the converter is built correctly? What I mean is this: a wild mash of the pedal to the floor will allow the RPMs to jump up, right up to around the stall speed...but when is the converter too loose at the lower RPM? Mine starts to move the car right away, and at part throttle, the RPMs do not flare up...I judge that to mean it's doing it's job well.

In fact, I think my trans shift too quick into 1st and 2nd...but that's due to the governor weights, which I'm guessing are not the correct for the higher RPM I wish to see.

Talk to your converter guy.

There are differences between a 12" 2800 ztall and say a 9.5" 2800 stall.
again ask these questions with the builder of the converter and follow the advice.
They have forgotten more than I know about converters.
I know a converter "Stall rating" Is fooor YOUR application. If you order a 2800 converter and it 'stalls' close to that,, then you use it behind a stock slant 6 it will be much lower in stall.
Also there are three 'stall speeds' in each converter.
Ask that question to learn more from him/her.

i think this covers about 90% of the issue. thanks guys and JohnRR, i didn't think there was, i was just hoping. thanks for the PM also! some of the issue may also be the shift lever on the trans. i've noticed now that it shifts almost right away into 3rd. with the tighter converter i didn't really notice. the converter is a 9.5 BTW.
