Did it shift fine before you pulled the cover? Usually the cover realigns because of the shouldered bolts. You can try loosening the cover and taping it upwards then retighten. Otherwise Id say the syncro is going bad.
I am truckless..

It shifted fine before the cover was off. New trans with Passon Performance overdrive gear set.

You didn't by chance take the plug out of the bottom for the reverse idler detent did you? This happened to me and mine would not go into second after a hard launch. The ball come off of the spring in the detent and when this happens it lets the reverse idler slide forward freely and basically block the fork to allow second gear.
I agree, if that ball comes out you will never get it in second gear at WOT.

There is a plug I pulled out on the drivers side, rear, bottom to check if all the fluid was drained out. I had drained it earlier last winter and forgot I did. But I did not see a ball or a spring in the plug that I pulled out. This is my first 4 spd car so I'm learning slow but sure and appreciate all the advice.

That plug should contain the spring and steel ball. Maybe yours was missing all along. Easy way to tell if is gone is to pop of your reverse rod at the trans and move the lever into reverse. You should be able to feel the detent working to hold the reverse idler. Meaning it should lock and stay into posistion. If it moves freely both ways, you have most likely found your problem.
I unhooked the rod and when I pull the lever foreward I can feel tension until it clicks or shifts into reverse.

the plug they are talking about is on the rear of the case under the reverse light switch , it goes in at an angle , if you can feel the detent when shifting it wit hthe shift arm removed the ball is in place ...
Here's a novel idea .... CALL PASSON, his gearset and syncros. Did you use the fluid he specified ???
