I have always run Valvoline conventional 10W-40 (with zinc additive) in my street/strip small block, but switched to 10W-40 Valvoline synthetic for the first time and wondering my oil pressures are thru the roof.

Conventional was always at 40 lbs at idle and 60-70 lbs at speed. Now with the synthetic I'm at 60 lbs at idle and 70+ when cruising. Is this normal for synthetic oil?

Should I be running a thinner synthetic than what I'm used to? If so, what weight?

this is the first time I've heard of synthetic oil having more pressure than conventional oil

Mr.Cab Racing and winning with Mopars since 1964. (Old F--t, Huh)

Usually drops a couple pounds.

Oil filters are the same. NAPA Gold.

Weird. So the pressure should have dropped?

With real hot oil, the synthetic may hold a higher actual viscosity but it really does sound like you could run lighter oil... I bet 10W30 would work fine and put less load on the pump and drive. I'm happy with 20+ PSI at hot idle and 60 ish at speed.
