Finally worked most of the bugs out of my combo. I'm ready to try to install my 528 from the bottom. I've seen other posts that say I need to remove the pass side valve cover to install from the bottom is this for shure? I have Barton stage v covers over roller rockers. factory style mounts and Hemi k member.

I did a 528 Hemi from the bottom in a 69 B body with Indy valve covers and I had to remove the passanger side valve cover. Otherwise, installation was very straight forward. Good luck with your project.

If you have the heavier, thicker Barton valve covers they are wider and you might as well remove both because they will not allow enough clearance to install the engine from the bottom. The thinner stamp steel stock covers just give you enough by removing just the passenger side. Are you using a bendix power brake booster ? If you are bring the engine up into the engine bay just enough then reinstall the driver side cover before the K-member makes contact with the frame rails. This way the engine will be low enough and will not give you problems installing the valve cover. Big tip, use a plumb bob to square up the k-member with the frame rails, center off the bolt holes. this will get you close.

I removed both covers and must say that it was still pretty tight. Exhaust rockers are pretty close to shock towers when body is coming down.

O.K guys thanks for the answers. I'm not running power brakes, but it sounds like removing both covers will make life easier when going up between the shock towers, hoping not to but no big deal if I have to.

if you are using barton valve covers they will probably hit the shock tower when the motor is installed. it might not be a bad idea to modify the shock tower before you install the motor.
here is a pic of what i had to do to my ebody to get the covers to clear.

compare it to the unmodified drivers side.
i basicly moved the shock mounting hole about 1" to the outside of the car and removed the bump for the shock.
i also remove about 1/2 of the bumps for the upper control arms for additional header clearance.

Take this advise, he is absolutely right. I had to remove the sheet metal valve cover on my 66 Coronet. Also, the hold off valve on the late model brake proportioning valve can cause interferance on the DRIVER side. The plumb bob is also good advise, saved alot of lineup time.

Mr. Hemi Ragtop, where are you located in Tennessee? I'm on the east end, would like to talk about this deal.

I agree totally those Barton valve covers are really wide and will cause clearance issues. Do the measuring and make the changes and re-do paint work now if you expect to use those covers.

What covers will fit with my roller rocker set up. If the Barton /Stage v covers don't clear my shock tower. I really don't want to get into paint work. We are going to attempt the install this Sat.

i am using mopar performance cast covers on my 572 hemi with a old mopar siamese bore block.
they hit the un-modified shock tower under acceleration. i am using shumacher conversion mounts on this car.

IMHO a Hemi needs no valve covers on it to in from underneath. It's too easy to hit them on things as they just make the engine wider, period. I dont understand the big deal, as it's not hard to put the covers on afterwards....except for the passenger side heater hoses.

Take care,
Rick

I pulled the RH cover and it went right in. I think if the steering box had been off it would have fit with the cover on. Wished I'd swapped to a firm feel box before I put it in!

When we put my Hemi In my Dart, I took both valve covers off and had plenty of room.....and that was in a Dart!!

How tall should the engine be from the ground when we install from the bottom?
