I have a 1967 Plymouth Fury III with a '76 318 engine. It has intermittent lifter noise and I am wondering if I need to replace a lifter or two, should the new lifters be soaked in oil prior to installation so they are filled? Thanks for any info here.

I just installed a Comp cam in my 318 and the paperwork with it states that the lifters don't need to be pumped up before checking the valve lash. They do say it's good to soak the lifter in oil before installing so they well lubed.

If the noise is intolerable & warrants replacing no need to soak them. eng oil on the lifter sides and cam lube on the lifter bottoms. Then go thru the regular cam breakin procedure. For diagnosing: engine idling press straight down on each rocker arm on the lifter end with a wooden hammer handle and this will quiet a defective lifter & help you ID the bad ones if you can get them to act up long enough for you to get to em

Thanks Robert. I will try that. It does not do it all the time so I'll have to catch it when it happens

Try running a can of Rislone, Marvel Mystery Oil or even a QT of ATF in the oil. Usually intermitant lifter noise is caused by the lifter being dirty. The above products will help clean the varnish ect that makes them make noise.

I am truckless..

I don't believe the cam manufacturers are recommending soaking the lifters any more.
I'd definitely try to remove the varnish first.

Often on 318's it's the pushrods are wearing down and the rockers?
something to check!

I have found this to be correct most times as well. have had some lobes go south on older higher milage engines.

chased a lot of lifter noise to find it was only a exhast leak that would come and go as it heated up. could never hear it out under the hood but drove me nuts in the driver seat.

I have R&R the intake to get at the lifters then one by one open them up and clean them good with brake clean and stick them back in.

dip them in oil and drop them back in the same hole, fire it up and idle till they all pump up again. may take while some times to pump all the air out,but has fixed the ticking sound more than a couple times for me working on used engines from the JY.

you would be surprized at the solid crud/carbon that will build up in a lifter over time. kinda goes solid and tics.

just did a set of stock roller lifters last week for my stroker engine porject. had 2 that were clogged soild, but are clean and ready for service again.
