What is generally more important in determining when to change a timing belt: The age of the belt or the mileage on the belt?

The car is a 2000 Intrepid with ~60,000 miles. Still runs great and is all original and in great shape, I was just curious as I'm planning on going through the car this fall.

60k , change the belt .

in this case I would go by both the age and mileage of the belt , the general consensus is 60k , change the belt , It could last longer but if it's an interference engine I would not chance it , nor wait till fall unless it's going to be parked till then .

Thank god I don't have to worry about that. BMW still uses a timing chain! 1989 with 145,000 miles with no change.

I do mine at 30-35K, I have an interference fit head. Tim

Assuming it's the 3.2 or 3.5, every one I removed at 100-150k mi looked great still. They are a nice wide belt. I would consider putting a quality water pump on there at same time, whatever you decide.
