I just replaced the 318 in my '82 Plymouth Fury with a good running core 318 from a '79 ramcharger. I didn't touch anything else. Before the swap, my trans (904) shifted very firmly, now I can't even feel the shifts. What can I do adjustment-wise to get the firm shifts back?

Is the kickdown linkage properly adjusted? Does the trans seem to work well?

If all else is well, then a TransGo shift kit would work, or for a budget upgrade, maybe some Type F fluid.

It's Swifty! Swifty, you toad sucker!

Ditto on the kickdown. Sounds like it isn't adjusted properly. What it's doing is going through the gears one right after another without any delay. Don't drive it like that for long or it will need a rebuild soon.

If it's adjusted right, you should be able to see the throttle control lever on the transmission move back when you pull back on the carburetor linkage.

Did you pull the trans with the engine? Did you check the fluid?

No, the trans stayed in the car, and the fluid is good.
