Can you get away with it? Maybe. Depends on the engine, combustion chamber, head material, quench design, camshaft overlap, and to a lesser extent car weight, gearing, and operating-RPM range. Also depends on whether the throttle response - or lack of it - matters, or likewise gas mileage.
With aluminum heads, about 10.5:1, and a fairly large-overlap cam, it would be easier to run pump premium with as much as 36 degrees, but that's "ballpark" and still depends on those factors. If you have vacuum advance, under part-throttle conditions it will have more advance than the mechanical provides.

Lots of guys on this board have 11:1 compression and run on pump gas. The cam has to be carefully chosen to avoid detonation. Do you have aluminum heads or iron heads?

11.2:1 w/ a 588 solid roller and aluminum heads, I do however use Meth/H20 injection at the track for all out runs. Timing is at 38* in full at 2200rpm.

It also depends on application. 1/4 mile with cool air intake and cool down times between runs can run higher. Sustained high load like circle track or top speed runs build up heat which can cause detonation. CR likley needs to be lower. Summer street driving can be pretty tough also especially without cool air intake.

My 499 was 11 to 1 with a mp 590 cam and ran on 93 octane with no problem.

There is a chart on I believe, Hot Rod/ Car Craft website that will ballpark your octane requirement based on your cranking compression.
I ran 11.5 with 906's standard bore 440 with a 257* Racer Brown
cam on pump gas. That was before they started blending gas with ethanol though.

11to1 with 91 octane, 170 pounds of cylinder pressure very tight quench[.030] Alum indy heads, .030 over 440. 35 tolal timing all in by 3200RPMs. Cars weights 3750 and a 727 trans.
Iam right on the edge with 91 octane but that is the best we can get here.

11.3:1 512 with stealth heads ran fine on 93 octane pure gas. When my local gas stations that sold pure gas went to 87 octane only I had to go with the 91 octane corn blended gas. With the 91 octane corn gas I have to add 1 gallon of C-12 Race fuel (110 octane) to 4 gallons of the 91 octane corn gas.

I "think" this is the same guy that lives in houston, & he's wanting to do this on iron heads, i think not.

Running Eddy heads 10.25:1 with MP509 cam. Runs OK with 93 but I have been mixing 50/50 with 100 octane, runs strong and the cruise night patrons love the smell!

There is no way to say without your planned combo.

The more ethanol in your fuel the better your chances, it acts like a higher octane fuel even with the same octane rateing. It has a strong cooling effect that is not taken into account in the octane rateings. If it is in your area e-85 can handle a TON of compression, a lot more than its 105 octane would suggest, and local cruise patrons will be amazed at the smell of your car.

A compression test is only a small part of the equation, my dads geo metro would crank 210 PSI when new but ran noticably better on junk gas than premium gas. You need to do a compression test and figure out how tight your quench is, if you have old open chamber heads with no quench you are not gonna do it without a biiiiig cam. Also the old open chamber heads lose a lot of power backing the timing down that low, especially a BB.

No you can't. well you can but no good will come of it. Its funny these guys on here with 11 to 1 motors that are 12. sec cars. My J headed 360 ran 10.90s with 9.4 to 1 in my Dart. My current motor is 11.to 1 I mix the gas 50/50 112/91 with eddy heads. And it don't mater what cam you put in it ,cranking cylinder pressure does not dictate octane requirements. My father inlaws Comp Eliminator A dragster makes 1355 HP at 9600 rpm and it has 15 to 1 compression but the cranking compression is 150#s,So does that mean he can run pump gas? NO
His dragster held the NHRA Comp Eliminator A/D and B/D national record 6.6s and 6.8s 206 mph( cant remember the exact ETs) in 2005 2006.The Comp Dragster is for sale if interested it is a turn key operation, just back your tow rig to the trailer hook up and go to the racing. It can still run 60 under the index.
