Should a auxiliary transmission cooler be plumbed before or after the radiator, that is the ?
Thanks
Joe

Its usually best after. The cooler in the bottom radiator tank gets some heat out first. The added cooler gets more out with ambient air. Its a 2 stage setup.

I run the trans cooler first than the radiator. More consistent trans temps in cold weather, and the radiator does not have to work as hard cooling the engine in hot weather. Running radiator first, your more likely to have engine overheating problems.

on the other hand when the water temp is up it will heat the tranny fluid if the cooler is before the radiator...

I recently got a transmission cooler with a thermostat that I plan on mounting after the radiator. The thermostat only opens when the tranny fluid reaches a certain temp so no worries about too cool fluid.

there are actually 3 schools of thought on this.

first 2 mentioned.

before, so the rad will maintain a more consitant trans fluid temp.

after to cool a bit more than the rad can, as lower temps equal longer life.

third is to bypass the internal rad cooler all together.

A couple of aftermarket transmission companies recommend this option because of 1. the transmission can never cool further than your radiator temp using that internal cooler vs the external cooler that can go to ambient.

plus concerns for gunk in the cooler and some radiators are know for leakage.

I was always taught to do the first one. but after reading a few articles like that I will always get a bigger aux cooler and leave the radiator one out of the loop.

Wouldn't that cut off the fluid flow when t-stat is shut???

No, as the thermostat has an internal bypass. It acts as a short piece of pipe when it's closed. when it opens the internal bypass is closed and the fluid has to go through the transcooler.

I'm going to use a Mercedes A-class transmission cooler. here's a pic:

Now that is a cool piece. Do you have a part number for that cooler??

I sure do - here it is: (A) 169 500 06 00

I accidently put up the picture of the newer cooler style. my cooler has part numer (A) 169 500 04 00 (or A 169 500 02 00).

here's how mine looks like (a bit different than the one before):

How wide are the mounting points?

If you ever find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck.

I would have to measure but the cooler should fit nicely in front of the radiator. if you line up one hole on the left(in the picture it's the lower one but the cooler is upside down) with a bolt hole in the radiator support the hole on the opposite (right) side almost lines up with another hole in the radiator support. I just need to weld a short piece of metal to the mounting tab with the rectangularhole and I can fit this cooler without drilling any new holes in the radiator support
