I need to check the brakes on my 64 dodge with the tapered (keyed) type axles. Do I need to use a puller to get the drum off to service the brakes? I want to remove the drums not the axles to just check out the brakes.I'm sure this topic has been covered many times.Anyhow thanks for the input.

There are pullers for it but some tips I,ve read are to loosen the axle nut a little and drive in circles to pop it loose. I did one by pushing the car side to side by hand at the qtr panel. Make sure you put a coating of grease on the mating surface and keyway when installing.

Just to clarify a little, the puller for that application mounts to the lugs. If you get an oversized gear puller that pulls on the edges of the brake drum, you'll damage the drum.

Exactly right, and the ONLY tool to use. If you have any friends with "early" Fords, IHC shouts, Jeeps, Most AMC's, and a few other '50's cars or pickups, one of them might just have them.

If you ask your local auto parts store that rents out tools the front hub pullers for front wheel drives will work. They look like the old tool for the mopars.

Ive yet to see any parts store that has the correct puller for them.I have one in the garage and the rear brakes arent that bad to do once you do them.Just dont use a jaw puller or you will have instant junk for drums.I bought a 61 that some moron did that too.It was a 1 owner no rust low miles super clean car.Guy couldnt figure out why after the Mechanic he had that tore the drums off it would shake so bad the pedal jumped.I found some good drums at a local yard and cut them anddd it was fine.Rocky

The puller shown is a sears hub puller and it will work.

Thanks dudes. I actually knew what the puller looked like I just wasn't sure if removal was necessary to check out the brakes. Now i know.

I have a 72 pickup, W200. I also want to check my front brakes. Do I need to find the same puller to get the hub off? My FSM is lacking in this area, lol. Just want to make sure before I break something

Thanks,
-Dave

Edit: Nevermind, I figured it out. For future reference, once you have the six 9/16" bolts out, and the hub-lock assembly off, there is another 1.5" spacer you need to knock off with a hammer. Then you'll have a snap ring, and the nuts/washers hold the bearing assembly in.
