forgot, depending on how much diy you are interested in and budget, there is a thread going on efi a differnt way. people have adapted the 5.0 mustang efi to mopars as well.
required a new distrbuter, or modifying the ford and mopar ones to work, plus you will need to put injector bungs in a bb intake. could probably be done in the 500 range if you could do the work.
if you needed the distrbuter would probably be closer to 1k.
just for a frame of reference, the basic efi system for my car cost me 300 bucks. I spent another 700 or so to make it work. 110 for fuel pump 150 for regulator 175 for efi line(hose) 50 for sending unit 15 for efi hose clamps 20 for filters
some kits come with most of this stuff, but just to give you an idea. not cheap, but I drive my car way more now than I ever did with a carb. when I had a carb, I probably put 500 miles a year. so maybe 2 tanks of gas. I probably have 2 tanks in it already this year, and it was down for a month while I rebuilt the suspension.

Ain't nuthin' wrong with a carb...
I'd be doing a little poking and prodding before I'd give-up on the carb...
Too many of the same scenarios here on different threads...
I can only describe what I've personally experienced with mine(going back 20 years)...
Pump-gas is (expletive-deleted)...
I use pump premium, spiked with a little Cam2, and have been using the green, marine-grade Sta-Bil for years...
No issues at start-up...Even after 'winter-storage' in these parts...

Dont forget to include a fuel system in that estimate $$$
The fuel system will be the most difficult and the cost will add up quickly. Figure at least $500 to $1000 to get the fuel system right with an in tank pump, baffling, regulator and return line.
The MSD Atomic EFI is the newest of the systems and. Is set up to use an external in line fuel pump without a return line. This will greatly simplify the installation if you meet the requirements for a returnless system (as posted rated in the installation manual posted on the site) . Another benefit is the ability to control timing. There is a special where you get a free MSD 6a box if you buy before the end of May. You can find info at www.atomicEFI.com
The FAST EZ EFI has been around longer has a good reputation and there at guys I. This board running it with good success. They just announced that it now comes with a lifetime warranty.
You can't go wrong with with either System.
Here is a link to a nice comparison chart of the available systems. Although I have been reachering this for a while and iny opinion the only two real options are the MSD Atomic and FAST EZ EFI systems.

You can do it for lots less if you play your cards right. A GM LS1 fuel regulator can be had for around 30 bucks. They are a combination filter and regulator and regulate at 50psi. You need to spend 10 bucks for an adapter for the outlet to mate it up to a rubber fuel hose. You can get a walbro gsl-392 fuel pump for under 100 bucks. At 50psi it will flow enough fuel for around 55-65gph at 12v-13.5volts. That's enough for well north of 500hp. You can add an external sump onto the bottom of your tank or add baffles on the inside. You can reuse your stock fuel pickup, just add a return line to it and like I said, add baffles to the inside of the tank. You can weld a sump onto the outside bottom of your tank and add fuel inlets off of there if you want to. Total cost around 200 bucks.
