I'm getting ready to seal my floors and trunk using this 3M product. My question is how many quarts will I need to do the car. Car is a 71B body.
Also would like to hear anyone from anyone who has experience using this stuff. Does it go on OK, did you use a brush, how fast does it set... any info would be appreciated

hard to say as I really never had to reseal an entire car.
I would say that a qt would be fine for the floor and maybe part or all of the trunk.it just depends on how thick you brush it on.

How to apply is a no brainer it's called brushable seam sealer for a reason
if you want it to look smoother you can take some thinner on your finger after you brush it on and smooth it out.
I tend to use the seam sealer in the caulk tube as it is easier to dispense then having to scoop the stuff out of a can with a brush,but it takes several tubes to do a whole floor.the qt brushable might be more economical as it will go further for less money.
another trick to keep the seams looking neat is to tape 3/4 masking tape to either side of the seam then brush on your seam sealer then before it starts to set remove the tape and it will give you even edges and you can do he thinner trick after you remove the tape to smooth the edges

best brushes to use are Acid brushes they are about 1/2" wide with metal handle you can get them at Harbor Freight in packs also you can but them at Home Depot or Lowes but might have smaller packs and cost more.auto paint supply stores carry them too

I'm looking to put it on nice and sloppy as the factory did. I'm thinking of using a 1" brush and cutting the bristles shorter so they are stiffer. Again, I've never done this so I was wondering how that stuff is like to work with. I'm assuming once its down you can't go over it with your brush again.

I've done this job on a 70 Coronet.
i.e replaced the entire trunk floor,
outer wheel houses, and trunk extensions
then seam sealed it all..

Here's what I did and it's been on there for 8 years now, no issues.

The 3m Brushable stuff shrinks a lot!
IMHO, You'll be swiping that on for days..Skip it

First, get a self leveling seam sealer(usually in tubes or 2 part
tubes that use a special gun...SEM, LORD FUSOR, EVERCOAT make this stuff as does 3M.) My personal choice is either one of those 3 (not 3M). The evercoat is the most reasonably priced I believe.

The reason for using this stuff first is, the self leveling
will flow as deep as it can inside the seam and really seal it up..

Afterwords go over it with your brushable seam sealer.
I used Wurth brushable seam sealer...

Plan on doing two coats over every seam..

For the first coat, I put it on with one of those body filler spreaders cut in half (about 2 inches wide)...
Waited a couple of days then put on a second coat with another
spreader cut about 3 inches wide,

immediately after the 2nd coat I went over it
a parts washer brush, but you can also use the acid brushes too....

The guys that put that stuff orignally must have
been union guys paid by the quart!

There was so much of it originally, that duplicating the
thick stuff they used back in the day in 1 coat is impossible ...

But, that is just my opinion...

You can use the 3m brushable if you want...
A lot of people swear by it... (I swear at it!
Transtar also makes it and its cheaper than 3M
Whichever brand you do use (most especially the 3M)

WEAR A PAINT RESPIRATOR (THE ONES WITH the charcol filters on it)
If there is any product made by 3M that should have a plain old
skull and crossbones label on it-

the only place you have to worry about duplicating the look of the factory seam sealer is the trunk area.
the main floor pan will be covered by rug and interior panels and will never see it so why bother putting it on thick and sloppy as no judge will ever see it.
You only need so much seam sealer to cover the seam to seal it,so why waste money on stuff that will never be seen again after the car is assembled as your not going to lose points and no one will know if you ever sell the car.

Thanks for the tips guys. A few good points were mentioned. I will certainly start and practice on the inside cabin first as it does not show then go on to the trunk. I plan on going to my local body shop supply store this week and see what they got.

It would take 2 or 3 cans of the 3M seam sealer to do a B-body Mopar. It's a pain in the rear to apply, and shrinks a lot as someone else mentioned.
The best stuff that resembles the factory sealer is from Wurth. It is easy to apply with a 1" diameter brush and leaves the brush marks looking factory without shrinkage. http://www.wurthusa.com/web/en/website/p...rsfinishing.php

This is the only photo I have where you can see the Wurth seam sealer around the 4-speed hump.

I used the 3M brushable & I concure with what others have said, shirnks a bit - not a lot in my case but its only a one part sealer.

I used the Evercoat Maxim OEM seam sealer, advantages are its an epoxy (non shrink), it'll tool to look like factory if wanted & its in a standard sized caulking gun tube unlike most other catalyzed seam sealers which are in 2 tube that require expensive guns or sausage tubes.

it was good stuff but i might try the Control Flow next time for a little more workable time. If you want the factory look, use the 3M in the trunk & something better everywhere else that's waterproof.

If you use maxim warm up the tubes & have a lacquer thinner rag with you for tooling/cleanup makes it easier to work with.

I used the 3M Ultra-pro Urethane #8361 seam sealer that comes in sausage tubes and it works great!!!!!

If you decide to use the Wurth product I highly recommend getting it through Goodspeed Motoring, Oh & BTW he's $5.00 cheaper than the above link to Pelican Products...

Wow so many choices

Now that you guys mentioned Wurth's product, I seeem to remember some good things about this product. I will look for a local distributor and compare the cost. Based on the reviews this looks like my #1 choice.

Has anyone ever used their anti flutter foam called "Flexible Foam". I need a product to put in between the roof skin and the braces. This car was dipped and removed everything that was in there.

Just ordered some for our Charger, it's from Lord Corp, called Fusor 121/124 flex foam super fast.

Had to get an automotive jobber's name from Lord Corp.
Their web page only lists industrial suppliers.
Call Lord (877-275-5673)and press "2" at the prompt and the guy will give you a local automotive supplier

I'm in the Cleveland area and they will have it tomorrow. One tube was about $50.

Another vote for Wurth brushable, 3 quarts will do the entire interior and trunk for about $75.

Used 1.5 inch brush, works great, dries pretty quick with no shrinkage.
