The guy has a 318, so that's what he wants to build.
I would not be afraid of that 274 cam with your 4:56 gears.
I run the MP 474(which I think is close to the X274) cam in my 340 and like it with 3:55 gears.

Good luck with your build.

If you're running 4.56's, then don't hesitate to run the xe 274....but anything less and a 318, you'd be fine to stick with the 268, especially if you're running eddy heads.

What stall? If it flashes high enough I'd go a step higher cam with a engine like yours, perhaps a XE284H.

Small motor in a pickup which by nature is heavy?
Go for the smaller cam.
Your heads will take care of any breathing issues there are and don't need to be crutched by a big cam.

Normally I agree with you, but if hes making 300hp @ 5250 he's also making 300lbs-ft @ 5250. Remember that \6's ran these things too with realitive ease..

It's a mistake. It is possible to overcam an engine. What size tires are you going to run in back?

28in 295/55/15 MT ET streets!I talked to Ken Hensley,He said i would be happier with XE268 cam and going with 4.10 gear and be much better cruise! So I gonna use the xe268!Now my issue is they asked me about milling my heads, with kb167 pistons and these heads out of box would give 9.7to1 comp but milling them could get 10.1 or could go to 10.5 comp and still run pump. What would you guys do?

If you're unsure of which cam to use, always go with the smaller of the two.

Look at whatever cam catalog you have decided to use. Go clear to the bottom of the list where the biggest and baddest cams live. Look at them, don't buy them. work your way up the list. Its OK to close your eyes and imagine what they would sound like but don't buy them. When you get to the one that looks too small but says it will work in a 318 truck, BUY IT.

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is.

/6 engines made these trucks move, sure, but a ten speed bicycle is faster off of the line. With the gears, stall, and tires this guy is running my guess is he wants to go fast.

Eddie heads, big valves, small bores, an XE-274, and valve shrouding are, at least to me, a recipe for a really lazy motor. Even if it produces decent numbers up top the usable power curve down low is going to be flat.

All of this aside, you if plan on going big block later on in the life of this project, why blow $1400 on a set of heads you can't reuse on the new motor?
