Hey all,
Im going with SPI for all my primers and clear, but they dont do base.
The only thing I can get locally is PPG omni or Dupont Nason. I have not used either, but I hear they both go on very thin and need up to 5 or 6 coats.
I know this is like opening up a can o worms, but I need some suggestions on a decent brand that will do F6.
Thnx

Pro spray - call Chad, he'll ship it to you. Excellent product, reasonably priced. I used all SPI on my datsun project, great stuff - you'll love the 2K primer & epoxy.

Have ever thought of not doing base coat clear coat?

The factory used single stage enamel. The conversion to base coat / clear coat doesn't always come out right. I can't tell you how many FK5 base coat / clear coat disasters I've seen. they look nothing like the real color.

I would recommend PPG single stage.

I can tell you first hand that the DuPont is too pale and the PPG too dark/green. The PPG is a tad closer though. I you want it right you are going to have to do a custom mix.

Chris, he started off wanting to go single stage but it's his first attempt at painting & you can't color sand single stage...

Agreed, the Dupont is for sure too pale in comparison to the OE paint. Not the best pic, but here is my "mostly" original pint '69 Dart and the left front fender was just sprayed using Dupont. You can sort of see the difference here, but more noticeable in person.

Sherwin Williams shows a formula for basecoat in the 7000 series. I've used it before on some black and it covers very well. Not very cheap though, it's their top line base. There is a very good SW dealer here in town.

Oh didn't know that.

I paint a lot of stuff myseld but I would never paint a car myself. Paint is just too expensive. I'll pay an expert to do it.

When we painted my 69 1/3 RR with PPG base/clear (Code 97 Rally Green), it took them three tries to get it right with sprayed samples. I had the original color under the trunk seal to match it too...........

Hey thnx for remembering me RT.
Chris/Morty, Yeah I kinda agree with you. I thought Id be nuts to try it myself, but then I thought "why not?". Ill never know if Im any good at it if I dont even try. I also heard people say leave it to the experts when I rebuilt my tranny, or put a 6 inch lift on my truck, or gutted and redid my kitchen and bathroom or countless other projects. But I did those myself and they turned out great. Took alot longer than a pro and I hit some snags along the way, but I got it done.
A couple things that made me want to try is the fact Im doing the interior and trunk too. So I ca kinda practice in those areas. Plus I have a friend who shoots cars on the side who can help me out if needed. If I cant even shoot the interior without screwing up, Ill know that its just not for me and Ill have my friend do it.
But the thing is I want to at least give it a shot myself. Its part of the hobby for me....to attempt and learn new things.
Plus, this is the car to learn on. Its not numbers matching, will never win any trophies, and is a driver. I dont think I would attempt it on a true 69.5 Bee or a Cuda.
I think u get my point, I just wanted to clear that up.

Anyways, I can only get F6 in Omni locally, cant get Deltron. For dupont, cant get Nason, only chromabase, but its $650 a gal! Yikes!
I checked Matrix and there is a distibutor about 70 miles away. U tech is 100 miles away.

I will check on Pro spray next.

Thnx for the advice so far guys

you can sand single stage acrylic urethane! i use ppg dcc concept single stage and you can color sand it and buff it to a high luster.

You sure can,....but would you want too?, esp F6, knowing that it has metallic, as well as pearl, and a host of other agents designed to "flop/flip" the color hue?...esp for the OP, who is going to attempt his first paint job...

IMHO the OP is better off with a BC/CC, he will get better results, a better finish, and a medium he can correct to some degree should he make a boo-boo

Hey newbee, if you know about SPI then read thru the forum there & you'll see plenty of examples of ProSpray that are outstanding, as a 1st time painter you'll be pleased. As well as with the SPI clear, buffs out nice, runs clean up really well.

My datsun is an orange from an 07 GTI, coverage was really good, I think I used about 1.25 gallons of base overall & if I remember correctly it was about $200 for the base give or take. Guarantee you Dupont,PPG, etc are not worth the extra $400.

SPI universal clear - after 1500 ?? grit, polished with McGuire's, just a good example of polishing

EDP...I got a PM in to Chad over at SPI forums. Just waiting to hear back. I also have a buddy of mine who knows of a prospray jobber about 50 miles from me.
Im also a little suprised that Datsun took 1.25 gal. Looks good though. Thnx for the info.

Oh and MuscleMopar, youre right, that RR came out very nice.

If worst comes to worst, Ill do the Omni cuz its local, but Id like to explore other options. Plus the guy at the Carquest where Id be getting the Omni seems like he doesnt know anything whatsoever. I know more than him and I only started researching all this 2 weeks ago. Makes me think he would completely screw up the formula.

maybe it was less base then I'm remembering, I'd have to look it up to be exact but I did paint the engine comp., the insides of the doors, jambs, pillars, trunk, spare tire area, underside of trunk lid, etc... so its pretty complete.

I remember having to order some more from Chad midway thru, maybe I got 3 qt's first then another 1 1/2......cant remember.

The paint is mixed based on weight... I watched it being done once and could walk in and mix my own now. It's definetly not rocket science.
