Anybody have a technique to adjust their MP/Mallory distributor total advance without a distributor machine and without trial and error in the car - via measurements or something?

Get the Mallory distributor advance kit, part number 29014. Summit Racing has them for $32.95. It comes with paddles to set the amount of advance and springs and charts to set the rate of advance.

Cool - thanks! Wasn't aware such a kit existed.

Want an absolute hillbilly method?

Get a cam degree wheel. Drop distributor in center hole and hold the shaft tang in a vise. Tape/Affix a zip tie to the top of shaft as a pointer. Adjust advance mechanism, twist top of shaft and note swing in degrees. Multiply by 2 and you have you mechanical advance.

As far as the springs, that's more trial and error without a machine. The curve kit works well and has some suggestions on colors/pairs.

Trial and error works pretty good for this. Use a sharpie to mark the positions you've tried as you go. Did mine on the third try, didn't have to buy anything

Ha! Hillbilly has it's place. And I happen to have a degree wheel. Nice to have some options to choose from.

Buy the kit from Summit. Very simple to use. For a street car it's pretty simple find what your motor wants for initial and use the paddle that limits it 38 degrees. Mine likes 21 initial, i used the 17 paddle to get a total of 38. Woked fine.Only trial and error needed is to find what your motor wants for initial. Yes for a race car there would be more involved but for a street car it's a simple task.Kit is well worth the price.

Thanks. Was already dialed in using a machine and works well but I'm making some major engine changes and want to recurve it myself.
