I need some info/help. Just bought a used 4.7L 2005 Ram with the 90,000 miles and was giving it some much needed TLC as the previous owner didn't do anything other than oil changes for 7 years.

Started to change the spark plugs and one of the studs/bolts that holds the coil pack in place snapped off instead of the nut screwing off. Ugh.

No big deal, I'll just screw the stud out and replace it with some all-thread which it basically is anyway. The weird thing is I can't get the stud to come out. It un-screws and loosens up, but won't actually come out of the hole. It's like there is a retainer or something inside the intake holding it in place. And now I'm scared of braking something else that isn't so easily fixed.

Any suggestions?

THANKS

The thread has some wadded up aluminum on it. That's why it broke off. You'll have to get the broken off part out and Heli-Coil the hole.
Or you could use PermaTex Form-A-Thread.

Getting the broken stud out out of the hole is the problem.

Does anyone know how the stud attaches inside the intake? The hole diameter on the top of the intake is much larger than the stud and there feels like some kind of sleeve within the intake that the stud actually screws into.

The stud can be un-screwed to be loose in the intake hole, can be wiggled around and pulled up/down a little, but doesn't release from whatever is holding it inside the intake so that it can be completely removed. It almost feels like there is a nut within the intake that sits in a recess to lock it in place, but when you back the stud out the nut/sleeve comes out of the recess and just spins with the stud too. Keeping it from completely releasing and coming out.

After breaking the top of the stud off at the coil pack hold-down nut, I'm apprehensive of putting too much stress on everything trying to remove the rest without knowing what I'm really dealing with. The last thing I want to do is break something in the intake and turn a $25 spark plug change into a major $ fix that requires taking it to a mechanic.

I've never even checked the oil on a 4.7L.

However a buddy of mine has done quite a bit of work with them, and if his memory is correct the intake bolts are the captive type. So are the valve covers.

With that style of bolt, the whole intake manifold can be removed and the bolts come off with it. Then, the bolts usually can't be removed from the part without taking the part completely off and then grinding the retainer part of the bolt off on the bottom.

As you stated, don't put much stress on it...the intake can be broken and ususally is not serviced, so if you break it then you will have to scare up a used one.

My buddy also recently aquired a used 4.7 ram and did quite a bit of work to it, and he states maybe one of the coil mounts survived...all the rest snapped right off. So I guess it is a pretty common issue.

the stud is just to hold it[coil] in place so i would not panic too much!there are many ways to fix it but as far as getting the old out is a waste of time.i have a 2004 4.7 in my dakota.do you have a pic of it?if it was me i may grind it flat and bond a bolt in its place.

Thanks for the info about the being "captive". That's what I was afraid of. What a freaking DUMB design!

I'll try to post a picture this weekend when I mess with it a little more.

asside from bonding a bolt there and thinking BIG! lol you could bridge a piece of sheetmetal from outer 2[if in the center of intake]and a tab would hold the loose coil in place with a [6mm] stud used as a dowel going down.
