I know Amsoil & Royal Purple are supposedly REAL 100% synthetic oils, but any others? Lucas?

Real synthetics; are you referring to the PAO vs. Ester vs. Group III debate?

I don't know enough about them to even be able to answer that!

I think Mobile 1 is still 'real'. I recall them taking some other oil manufacturers to court over this because their oil was true synthetic and others started with crude as a base. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Yes, that's mostly true. In 1999, Mobil brought Castol before the National Advertising Division(NAD) of the Better Business Bureau. So it was a case, just not a case at law.

Basically Mobil took issue with Castrol labeling their Syntec line of motor oil as "Synthetic" because it was formulated with highly refined crude oil otherwise known as Group III and not the traditioal synthetic as formulated with Polyalphaolefin(PAO) - Group IV and or Ester - Group V

You see, before that point synthetic motor oils were derived through "Chemical Reactions" and not "Refined" from crude oil.

However, as the story goes, the NAD sided with Castrol in the end because they reasoned that since crude oil is refined after its pumped from within the earth, it is therefore changed from its original state and thus synthesized. So really, going by that logic, ANY motor oil on the market today is synthetic because every passenger car motor oil found on the market today has some variation of refining or has been created through chemical reactions.

So today the question becomes, what level of "synthesis" are you looking for in a motor oil? Is it Group II, Group III, Group IV and or V?

Oh, and only the oil blenders know what's in each finished product and they're not telling so it's mostly all speculation on our part, the consumer.

Lastly, synthetic motor oils are unregulated so marketers are free to use the term "Synthetic" and any variation thereof as they see fit; whatever sells the oil. For example, Fully Synthetic, Semi-Synthetic, Partial Synthetic, 100% Synthetic, Synthetic Blend, etc., all non-regulated marketing terms.

And the debate rages on, how "synthetic" is your "synthetic"?

I'd be surprised to hear that Joe Gibbs, known for his nitch in Racing and Hot Rod motor oils would commission the companies that formulate and produce his own oils to produce a Joe Gibbs branded wind turbine gear oil. I doubt this is the case.

Although Joe Gibbs Driven does have a YouTube video that references the lubricant technology that goes into wind turbine gear oils. Could this be where your friend made the connection?

I emailed Shell to find out how much synthetic was in their 10-30 Rotella. Never got an answer.

Thanks Anthony, I figured you would be able to clear that up... at least as much as can be.

Shell is not in business to sell synthetic oil!
Most conventional oils are a by product of making gasoline.
They are fuel companies more than oil companies!!!

No one makes a better synthetic than SCHAEFFER MFG.
Most likely they are making Joe Gibbs oil also.

Yet they sell "full" synthetic oil.

Schaeffer Manufacturing Company, good stuff, ISO certified, the oldest crude oil refiner in the United States - 1839.

Note that if Schaeffer is using any PAO Group IV or Group V Ester in any of their formulations, they're doing so through a third party chemical company. Likely, their synthetic oils are highly refined from crude oil otherwise known as Group III, which nothing wrong with those, in fact I've got Group III motor oil in both my daily drivers right now. However Group III synthesized oil is not what some refer to as "true synthetic".

As far as Joe Gibbs goes, it's been said that he utilizes Delta Oil - (linked) as the blending company and Lubrizol - (linked) as the additive company for his motor oil formulations.
