Was doing a little maintenance on the race car today, and I decided to do some different wiring on my msd box, I have never had the wires ran to the battery like msd says to do, 'cause I don't like long runs of wires, if I can get around it, I have always ran my msd hot wire off the starter lug, or the starter relay, on the fire wall, that is where it is now, and the ground to the engine block, so I had some heavy gauge wire, and I thought I would redo this, and run the wires to the hot and cold on the battery to just see if there was any difference in anything, and I had a major problem by doing this, it developed an over charging problem, the volt gauge was pulsing between 14 and 17 volts with the engine running, and the way it was wired before it was a constant 14 1/2 volts on the gauge, now someone a lot more intelligent than me explain what is going on with it wired this way?????????
Thanks Dave

All I got is more questions. What is the charging sys ? what alt and what regulator and how is it wired and where to ? and where is the volt meter and how is it wired?
Ok Vern, I'll try to answer your ??? about it, Stock mopar alt, 14 1/2 volt constant output reg, the blue one, #10 gauge wire from alt charging lug run thru a painless wiring shutoff relay, to the hot side of the master disconnect in the back of the car, voltage reg wire off the alt, to the voltage reg, volt meter is in the back of the car, right above the bumper, next to the master disconnect, wired to the hot side of the disconnect switch, with a grd to the chassis. I had a problem all last season with it over charging, and finally replaced the msd box and all was good, but as I said I have never had it hooked to the battery, like msd says to, everything has been replaced on the car when I was chasing this problem before, so I have plenty of spare stuff, ignition wise, I was just curious if I was leaving anything on the table so to speak, with it not being hooked directly to the battery, but I guess not, if it is gonna cause problems like this, it just doesn't make sence to me why the problem would occur, I worked all day yesterday, bypassing stuff, and changing stuff, to try and figure out why the problem exists, but finally had enough of it kicking my a$$, and put it back the way it was to start with, and it is fine like that, so go figure.

wow your car is wired just like my with the same parts and everything. my volt meter is wired to one battery. I have two. and I do not have the ground on the MSD box going all the way to the battery just to the block. I have many grounds on my car. there is 5 going to the block and trans with solid motor mounts. but the hot is all the way back to the battery. one think I would like to check is take a meter and see if you got that many volts at the battery. like you are reading at the switch. I can't see any reason why changing the wiring like that would change your meter reading. But with that reg it should be reading that. it is a a 14.2 constant output. I lose 1 volt from the alt to the battery ? Quote:

All I can think of is the MSD box is eating up enough voltage and the battery doesnt see it when the MSD is hooked up to the starter... when you have it hooked up to the battery the battery is getting the voltage... but if its seeing anywhere near the 17 volts then your regulator is messed up... which I think its full fielding all the time... this is just a guess
