So here's the deal I have a 360 la and i'm wanting to run it in bracket races. I'm being pushed to slap it together and run her but that's not where I wanna start. So I need some help building it on a budget. I'm thinkin run the factory heads for now and possibly the factory flat top pistons. I have a 3000 stall converter so I wanna run a big cam. Have a edl340 intake and I believe 600 Holley. How big can I go and what's needed to run anything other than a hyd flat tappet cam? Any other cheap power adders would be help ful too. Take a guess what it'll run in a quarter installed in a 3600 pound d150 with 4.56

First, what family of 360? is it an LA or a magnum?

with a 3000 stall, I'd think a cam around 230 degrees of duration @ .050 lift would probably work alright, assuming stock stroke 360. what are your rear gears?

Try www.mopar1us/dyno.html. I have used many of these combos for good cheap results.

Don't get too carried away with the big cam idea. If you have a big cam with that little intake and carb, low stall converter, will be a turd in that heavy truck. Match the parts you have to work with, it will be much quicker...

What compression are you planning?
Shoot for 10.5:1 or so, Edlebrock performer RPM cam, AirGap intake, well tuned 750 DP will get that truck into the very low 12's or even high 11 in good air. Stay away from power adders for bracket racing unless you really know what you're doing.

Early 360s had flat top pistons. Ditch the 600 holley and get a 750. the LD 340 intake will work fine. Use steel shim headgaskets to keep the compression up. Spend some time doing some good bowl work and port matching on your stock heads. Its not that hard to do and if your on a budget it can yield some good results if you take your time and do it correctly. A cheap summit or purpleshaft cam will make decent power if you cant spend much money. Buy the best torque converter you can afford

Thanks for the input. The goal for the pickup is to run 12s with factory heads and pistons but it needs to run faster than 14s because that's what my brothers car ran last year with a 360 in a 74 scamp. I think he ran a 268 adv cam with factory heads and pistons with 3.91 gears and street bfgs

Gonna need some compression, gonna have to switch pistons or mill/replace heads. No factory LA head/piston combo will get you much over 8 to 1 compression and any "summit" or "eddelbrock" (chevy) cam will not do much with that low compression, certainly not low 12s. If you are gonna stick with the factory low compression set up you need a quality custom cam with mopar specific lobes and a tight LSA to artificialy build compression with out loseing flow under the curve. Spend money on pistons, heads or cam, you can't skimp on EVERYTHING!
