Maybe you guys have an idea:

I'm looking for a solution for my Coronet's headliner problem. The headliner is made of compressed cardboard (about 1/8" thick) and held up by a two-piece system, the backside is made of metal, the lower side of plastic. The plastic part is the problem, it cracks whenever you touch it but as it snaps onto the metal section there's a lot of force needed to get it off and on.

I wonder if you guys in the US would know of a supplier who still sells systems like this or if someone would have any idea what to use instead.

Any ideas?

Sorry I can't help. I just thought it funny, they looked like pics of the head liner in my 69 Satellite wagon, missing pieces and all.

hmmm. i looked around but came up with nothing. what you might want to do for the cost of an e-mail is send a message to the folks at Dixie Restorations. they might know of a place that can fabricate or even have one.

Kramer's sells the cardboard headliner, and had their vendor make me some cardboard sunvisors for my '63 wagon after I'd bought the headlinder from them, which was $395 IIRC. Try contacting them to see if they know anyone reproducing the plastic retaining strips. That design started with the '50s Mopars and they built the wagons that way until at least 1970. There may also be someone making plastic extrusions for a different application that could be used as retaining strips; it just needs to clip onto the center spine (metal backing behind headliner) and be wide enough to support the cardboard panels and hide the gaps.

Luckily mine are still in good shape.

Despite having all the right clips and strips, mine still drooped in the middle. I made a kinda crude speaker box to hold it up. I also made a hidden bracket to fasten the dome light to effectively holding up the headliner around it.

I've thought about trying to make something in fiberglass, but, it would lack that OEM appearance, but, I guess it would be better than looking at the uncovered metal.

As an aside, I don't know if they could be made to work, but, I've noticed that the 2nd generation Ramcharger trucks used a similar locking plastic strip for their headliner.
