I have a forged 440 crank that 20 years ago was in a running 440 and BB cable floor shift 727 65 Plymouth Satellite. The owner at that time said there were no problems. The car sat for 15 years before I got it from another owner. The 440 siezed up and they kept the crank and 7 rods and pistons. I have a very good condition 78 440. If I get the newer bearing kit for 78 440's will the forged crank work. I like to keep the crank, converter and trans set togeather.
After almost 71 years I am on my last car. A 65 Plymouth Satellite straight axle altered wheel base car.

The bearings for a newer 440 are different?
They have a wider thrust face but that is not a concern. You can't put the wide thrust face bearing in an early block .... without machining the block to accept them .... but you can use an early bearing in the later block.
and you can use a wide thrust face ... cast crank ... in the narrow thrust face bearing and vice verse ...

Yes they did. My 74 is a cast crank. I'm without a doubt going to use the steel crank, but not sure which block i'm going to use yet. Does this mean that if i buy early bearings for the 69 motor, that i can use them in the 74 block if i decide to use it?
Also i noticed that alot of bearings don't specify which year they are for? Do the later ones usually specify?

This makes me think i should buy the early bearings, and then they will also work in the later block if i decide to go that way. Is there any downside to running early bearings in a later block?

So back to my previous question. How to you determine if a bearing is for an early block or a later block?
By the part number .
you can probably find pictures to show the difference on the website of everyones favorite reseller of CCJ .

Thanks for the repies, Guys. The main reason I want to use the older crank is it was matched to the early cable shift transmission and converter at one time. I know there are some converter diferences in the push button and cable shift trans, so prefere to use a know to run trouble free combo. It is an early 440 crank. Probably a 65 or 66, if they had them in 65. The original owner told me but that was so many years ago. and the person I got the car/engine parts/ and transmission from threw the block away. I do have the mounts and balancer that were on the motor and it is a early forged crank. Thanks By the way this will be my last project and will be an AFX clone car. I had a tube axle car way back in 1969 and plan on ending career in car hobby with another one. So I should be good to go with a ring and bearing kit in my 78-440. It was run on natural gas and is super clean inside and no ridge on walls. Thanks

The difference between early and late bearings is the diameter of the thrust face. It is block, not crank, specific. You can run the early style in a late block with no issue, you cannot run a late style in an early block.
They say there are no such thing as a stupid question. They say there is always the exception that proves the rule. Don't be the exception.

sounds to me if you use the late block your good to go with any bearing, the 69 will have to be correct.
exactly I use the early bearings on the later blocks because they are way cheaper! $86 vs $216??
