My 62 Plymouth has a big dent in the pass fender. What's the best way to remove the dent? Will painless dent removal work? The car still has original paint so I want to preserve the fender as much as possible. Are there any places in the Detroit area that could fix this?

Thanks!

There is NO way that can be fixed without body work and paint. I actually know a man who can repair it to perfection without any fillers, but you'll still have to paint (and it'll take him a few years, as he's NOT fast, but awfully good!)

The metal is stretched and folded. Hammer and dolly required with paint to follow.

Never mind the nay sayers.

Yes of course there is. Best bet would be for you to remove the fender your self. Then find some one that actually knows how to work metal. That dent can actually be knocked out by a "good" bodyman. Or you could fabricate a patch to weld in place of the dent or again have a pro do it. Most body shops should be able to match the paint. Try not to use a shop that specialises in insurance ork they tend to do thing a little fast, and not so proper.

I have mechanical Aptitude.
I can screw up anything.

I think he wants to preserve the paint, that ain't gonna happen. Otherwise its easy to knock the dent out.

So it sounds like painless dent isn't an option. If fixed the traditional body shop way, how would it be done? Hammer & dolly sounds like the common answer. What about the spot welded pins that attach to a slide hammer? Would it be pounded out close and then filler used? No filler if the guys really good? What can I plan on happening?

I'm asking because when I take it somewhere, I want to understand the various and best options to make sure the car is done properly. I'm OK if the paint is spotted in but want to minimize it. I don't want to end up with something worse.

Any recommendations for someone in the Detroit area?

Thanks

If there's access from the back an old time bodyman would knock most of it out from the back and use almost no filler. It could also be pin welded and pulled with similar results, he would still need access to the inside for a dolly to work it. It's just the trick of finding a good metal man.

You might want to contact Gordon Duda &sons in Rochester Hills for the trim. Best I have ever seen. He might do fenders to? gordonduda.com

I've used one of those shrinking discs. Even without seeing the video and only a short instruction from the owner of the disc (Ed at E-body parts and restoration) I got real good results out of a h orribly stretched quarter panel on my old 67 Baracuda fastback.

Yes, it's amazing. I had no idea what could be done.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. Please keep them coming as I have a little time until I can get to the car.
