After 20 yrs of a hot VW budget I have been Lucky enough to swap an old bug for a VF Valiant ute with no motor. My brother is donating an A body Dana 60,15x3.5 15x 10 super tricks and he's gonna fab a cage mini tubs etc.its going to be a strip car with limmited street action. So the rollers sorted so what to do for engine and box..... NASCAR/Truck engine and box?Don't have unlimited funds so what do you guys think.thanks in advance.P.S my Vw is my only car has over 100000 street miles with various engines currently13.4@97 so tha Val will need to be a lot quicker, heavy maintance is not a problem I do it now with the bug.

Not knowing what is available , as in readily available , to you guys........I couldn't even begin to guess. What is the most common motor at your local track. Besides Chevrolet. Or Ford. Being able to easily get parts should make the choice for you. , whether it is an LA , B , RB or something more exotic.
Every thing here is pretty well over priced in my opion,Ive always imported what I've needed and it's worked out a lot cheaper so parts avaliabilty isn't a concern.A rebuilder 78 440 2.5k,1k rebuilder 318, W2 360 for 20 k aus dollars or 12 k for a full race webbered slant.I'm looking I'm the USA I'm sure it's my best bet, I haven't looked anywhere else yet gonna check race junk and the like to see what's around only had the ute for 12 hrs so early days yet!

A B1 low deck motor with aftermarket block would be my choice provided it fit budget for both car, motor/maintenance costs. Probably the best low budget motor would be a lowdeck 512 with a BIG flat tappet cam. That would be very easy on the wallet. I would want ported heads and big cubes if choosing a flat tappet cam motor versus a roller cam motor if it comes down to that. In order of choice, best heads, then cubes, then cam choice, then single or tunnelram.

I think you need to define budget. I bought my short block off a member here and it was a good deal, i fitted my cnc port RPM'S on it and had a new ultimate converter made. All in all i dont have a fortune in the motor and i'm pleased with the performance. Mick
