I've got a issue with my power brakes and the FS manual doesn't cover this....

WHen the engine is at idle (~750rpm), if I apply the brakes the engine sputters and dies. '69 Charger with PB drums, although the booster is meant for a PB disk setup (Bendix- the car apparently had disks in the beginning and someone down the line swapped them out for 10" drums. This will be rectified someday....) Also, the PB booster had been professionally rebuilt- about 10 years ago :/

It's sounding like to me that I've got a leak somewhere in the booster but it only happens when I apply the brakes- otherwise the engine idles ok (not great though IMO).

Has anyone run into this issue before? Any ideas as to what could cause this?

Thanks as always!
David

Have you disconnected and plugged the vacuum line that goes to the booster and see if the engine still stalls.

And then if it don't maybe the vacuum check valve is bad?

Last summer I replaced my power brake booster that was about 15 years old because it was leaking vacuum and causing my car to backfire in decell. Wouldn't do it if I had the booster disconnected, the power assit seemed to work fine the brake booster just wouldn't hold vacuum when I tested it.
And my idle was iradic also is what really got my attention beside the small backfire on decell.

Sounds like an internal leak in the booster. I don't think it is the check valve because the check prevents flow from the engine to the booster. Did you do the classic booster test yet? With the engine off, maintain a light pressure on the brake pedal. Start the car maintaining a slight pressure on the pedal. If the booster is functioning the pedal will drop slightly.

Hmm... no I haven't actually. I just tried it though and the engine didn't drop off at all when I hit the brakes....

Ok, with the vacuum line to the intake manifold reconnected, I tried the 'booster test' and yes I did feel the pedal drop a little when the engine started. The RPMs were lower than normal though until I took my foot off, then the RPMs went up.

Still sounds like you have an internal leak. But at least you have brakes which is usually a good thing.

Sounds like you need a new booster.

I bought mine from Rock Auto, was here in 1 day.

Yea I'm beginning to think that too. Couldn't be wear-and-tear on the booster since the rebuild as the car's seen garages and body shops more than the road since then, so all I can figure is age and/or dry rot on the rubber/plastic pieces caused it to fail.

I just checked out Rock - they want me to mail off my booster for a rebuild rather than send me one outright. If I'm going to have to do that I'd rather send it to Booster Dewey....
