I was trying to extract a freeze plug out of the side of my 400 engine and I accidentally pushed it all the way in. Can anyone suggest a way to get it out?

are you able to punch a hole in it? you could then pry it out with a screwdriver. you could also try prying the sides until its small enough to pop back out the hole.

Needle nose pliers, pull it out sideways.

Ok, right after I posted, I worked on it and managed to get it out. I pried up the edges against the block (afraid the whole time that I would nick the edges and ruin the seal of the freeze plug into the block) using various different tools (pliers, big screwdriver, vise grip, needlenose pliers, etc.). What worked best was using the hand grip of my biggest pliers as a crowbar, prying up opposite ends until it kind of got rounded, then it somehow fit out of the hole. I was very careful with the second one, more confident with the third, and by the time I got to the other side of the block it was a piece of cake.

Thanks!

they will pop right out if you grab them with a pair of large channel locks...

same here. clamp them down and pull and wiggle them till they pop out.

a tip for seating the new ones, use a LARGE socket on an extension as your "guide" and hammer them in with a rubber mallet. use the biggest socket that will fit inside the "cup" of the plug. provides a nice even impact around the full circumference of the plug.

Haven't used locktite, but I do use black RTV around the lip as both a lube to help slide them in, and as an extra measure of sealant incase the casting has any imperfections

Non-hardening Permatex works well, is cheap, and lasts. Put it on the hole, not the plug, and as you insert the cup it will push up a little ring of goo, helping the seal.
If you guys are having trouble with cup plugs, I hope you never have to install the convex type for the earlier engines that you dent in the middle! They're not cups, just disks. Spooky as all get-out to install and hope they don't leak.

I also use the black RTV. The nylon drivers only cost a few bucks and don't mar the plugs like the socket method. I used the sockets for years and it worked just fine, though...
