I have a 904 in my 88 Dakota don't know what year the trans is. Do i need to check the fluid with it in park or neutral or does it make a difference. Thanks

Engine running in neutral with trans up to operating temp and yes it makes a difference.

Hot fluid expands slightly and with a stock valve body its not charging the torque converter when in park. So the reading on the dipstick level will appear off.
