I just got a 1 3/8 front bar from Hellwig. It is tube rather than solid so it only weighs 15 lbs. The solid 1.125 bar that I had was 18 lbs.

Thanks for the info Andy. I have a solid bar now and it's definitely porky.

How does the rate compare to the smaller solid bar?

When are they going to crank out some Imperial stuff?

Nice piece. Love the lightweight stuff, and I sure appreciate it when guys like you post the difference in weight.

Kevin - a hollow bar is almost as stiff in torsion as a solid bar. The stress is linearly proportional to the distance from the center (at the center it is zero). The spring rate is proportional to the radius to the 4th power. It depends on the wall thickness of the tube. If you know the wall thickness I can do the math, but, just guessing I would say roughly twice as stiff due to the difference in outside diameter.

The Hellwig bar is 1.375 OD with .250 wall thickness.

It is 80% stiffer then the 1.125 solid bar, and it is 11% lighter.

The bar is for my '65 Coronet. I welded mounts onto my '65 K frame so it would accept this style of anti-sway bar.

Andy, why Hellwig instead of the other hollow bar manufacturers?

Will this be made for the 73-76 A bodies and 70-74 E body cars?

Hellwig has them for 73-76 A-bodies. I helped them test fit the prototypes. Took 3 iterations to get a really nice fit.

I'm almost sure they have them for E-bodies too.

73-76 A-body. You can not just copy a factory sway bar because of the added diameter puts the dip too close to the inside of the K-member. Also, you need all the room you can get because most 30+ year old K-members are dented which gives you even less space from stock.

Stout sway bar mount cross brace. Stout swaybar bushing clamps. Larger than stock end link bushing bolts...

What's the difference between 73-76 A-bodies and older A-bodies when it comes down to suspension and K-frame and such?

Not sure I fully understand your question. Hellwig makes tubular bars for almost all Mopar RWD vehicles. They do not make the 1.375 bar for everything though. The 1.375 bar is probably too big to fit inside the K-frame on the later model cars. Besides, with the shorter lever arms most people don't need that big of a bar.

Take a look at their website and see if you can find what you're looking for.

I have a 73-76 Hellwig 1 1/4" diameter hollow sway bar. Weighs 8 3/4 lbs on a postal scale. 4 3/4 lbs lighter than an Addco 1 1/8 solid bar and only 1 3/4 lbs heavier than a stock bar.

FOR 73-76 A-BODY NARROW SWAY BARS ONLY:

Weight (lbs) Lbs lighter than 1 1/8" solid
Factory 7/8" Solid Sway Bar
Weight (lbs): 7
Lbs lighter than solid 1 1/8": -6 1/2

Addco 1 1/8" Solid Sway Bar
Weight (lbs): 13 1/2
Lbs lighter than solid 1 1/8": 0

Hellwig Hollow 1 1/8" Sway Bar
Weight (lbs): 7 3/4
Lbs lighter than solid 1 1/8": -5 3/4

Hellwig Hollow 1 1/4" Sway Bar
Weight (lbs): 8 3/4
Lbs lighter than solid 1 1/8": -4 3/4

When discussing with Dave at Hellwig, the difference in wheel rate between a 1 1/4 solid bar and 1 1/4 .250 wall was 390 lb/in vs 370 lb/in (73-76 a body). My math puts the 1 1/4 .188 wall at ~350 lb/in, 1 3/8 solid at 571-583 lb, and 1 3/8 .250 wall at ~542 lb/in wheel rate. All for a 73-76 A body. I'm sure you have them, but if you need the formulas for wheel rates from sway bars using the dimensions of the bar, let me know.
