My AAR was sloppily repainted years ago and am trying to undo some damage - the radiator support and surrounding was oversprayed with body color, I'd like to respray black (rattlecan if possible)again.
Satin, semigloss? Thanks!

I could be wrong but I thought that the area behind the grill was blacked out. nothing else. It does look better with more blacked out.

depends on what the painter felt like doing. Every car is different. The F8 Duster Im working on was painted all the way down like shown above.

Here is a pic of a survivor hemi road runner. Notice how little was painted compared to most of todays restorations.

I only posted pictures so the OP could see the shade of black paint. I have no idea how it was from the factory.

Obviously the paint is chipped and weathered. DUH. I posted this not in direct response to anything that has been posted in this thread. BUT you can see that there is no way they painted a uniform total covering of black out like 90% of todays restorations. The sparce pattern is visible on this car and several other survivor cars I have.
Here is a pic of a 5600 mile car no chips or weather.

If you do not have pics of your car with the original pattern to document your exact car, then what ever you do is a guess. The reason it was done was so no body color showed through the grill and under the bumper. Therefore you either shoot it sparce like the factory or complete like an over restoration.
Another survivor. 26,000 mile untouched car.Hardly any paint behind the bumper. Painted behind grill and very sparce below the bumper.
Oh and by the way the color used on the Challenger does not have enough sheen compared to the survivor pic I posted of the documented 5600 mile bee.

It's best to remember that the black was sprayed from underneath the car. I have typically seen more paint on the bottom of items than on the front.

I have had some that had a lot of paint in some areas and then very little in others.....on the same car. Besides the varying amount of paint car to car.

The only thing that rivals the variations on the rad harness black-out is the variations on the amount of paint on the engines. Same thing there; little to no paint some places while other places had it running off.

On my restos, I usually cover the area behind the grill pretty well with a satin black. I just want to be sure that there is no body color showing through the grill. That is a personal pet peeve of mine.

Master, again and still
