I've had my 70 RR for just over a year now and here's what I've been able to find so far...on the drivers side of the block there's numbers (9-17-68) so I'm figuring that's the date of the block. On both sides of the bottom of the block there's the following...(2468130-12)
LL
The LL has me stumped?I've looked through as many books as I can find as well as the internet but nothing on this LL...there wouldn't be any way that this would be the original engine by any chance? The car has just over 63,000 miles on it.It's an original 4-spd car but the tranny is an 18-spline (C 87622)(C95664 7)with an old tag towards the front of the tranny reading (8-15-67)...my buddy had the car for 15 years and said the original engine was blown up and replaced with a date-coded block.I'm just trying to put together the pieces of the puzzle.
Is there a slight chance the plant would have thrown a 68' 383 into a 70 RR?I know they weren't really fussy about mixing things up a bit...in a good way mind you.The search continues...

sounds like you have a 67 trans that would of came from something with a 440 or Hemi. The engine is a 68 version in your 70 RR. Neither the engine or trans are original for your car..

I am truckless..

I would think a 9/68 casting date would be a 69 model year engine. You can look on the machined pad just under the distributor. There will be numbers stamped into the top of it. May look similar to: E 383 10 15 HP or something along those lines. There may also be an VIN# stamped into the machined pad on the Passenger side of the block just above the oil pan rail near the front of the engine. This may possibly tell what car it originally came from. Let us know what you find. Good luck!

340 Shorty and 70 GTX thanks for the info...I figured it wasn't the original running gear (but man does it run good) but a 68 block is supposed to be a good one from what I understand...I'll try and dig deeper for the proper numbers...cheers

The LL is a foundry mark of some sort , don't pull your hair out trying to figure out it's meaning because it doesn't have any importance.

As said it's a 68 cast block that is cast late enough to be built for a 69 model year engine build. The pad on the block under the distributor will have an E 383 stamped on it along wit hit's assembly date under it. If it was an HP engine originally it will also have HP stamped there .

On the pass. side of the block at the oil pan rail there will be a machined pad with either a full or partial VIN , it is cast early enough to possibly have the full VIN of the car it was originally installed in.

The pass. side of your trans may also have a small machined pad on it, it's cast late enough also to be at minimum a 68 model year trans, again it will have a full or partial VIN stamped on the pad along with build date info.
