What determines the fuel sender size? I have a '72 barracuda with a 318.

Fuel sender size is generally the same as your fuel pump inlet/outlet size. A 318 should always be 5/16, I would think. Big blocks got the 3/8 ones.

sending unit steel tubing OD. 5/16" OE on your 318. Slip a 5/16" open end wrench over the line to verify

Caveat emptor, if you are buying a new one. See:

and go to Q/A #22. Hope yours works!

Not always. 350, 361 and 383 TWO barrel cars got the 5/16 line.

I believe 383HP cars used 5/16" inch fuel line as well.

I recently bought my 5/16" fuel sending unit from AMS Obsolete's eBay store, in which it's supposed to be an OEM unit. Note that the unit I got has a brass float and not the plastic one as pictured - http://www.ebay.com/itm/150296871944

On a side note, Dwayne Porter is on the record for saying he's ran mid 10 second ETs with 5/16" inch fuel line and a 448CI engine.
