Since the transmission condition was unknown when installed it's possible that the pump is bad. The fluid level is a good indicator of pump function, if the fluid level stays the same when running in Neutral as it was when sitting overnight the pump isn't working.
On the passenger side of the trans there are three "humps" with pipe plugs installed, the center hump is where you measure the line pressure; the shifter has to be in a forward gear when testing.
