Hi all

I'm trying to help a buddy figure out his shifting issues. Here is the skinny he has a really cool 37 Plymouth truck with a 440 with a moderately built 727 in it.

The issue is it shifts from first to third really quickly like 0 miles an hour to maybe 25. I looked at his linkage and it appears adjusted right, however it is an old style linkage instead of the three piece unit typical of mopar muscle cars, this is one long piece of metal that hooks to the bar underneath.

I looked it over and it appeared that linkage was fully engaged when shifting so I'm pretty sure it is not out of adjustment, however since I'm not familiar with this one piece unit I'm not sure.

Any pointers guys?

thanks
Mike

If you get no help in the open forum, send a PM to John Kunkel. He is a pretty sharp transmission guy.

What you describe is a throttle pressure (kickdown) linkage problem, either the adjustment or the set up. In order for the transmission to shift later you want to lengthen the linkage so that the transmission lever is further back at any given throttle setting.

Is the carburetor stock or aftermarket?

Aftermarket for sure. Not sure if it is a Holley Edlebrock

Aftermarket carbs need a brand-specific Mopar Throttle Lever extension in order for the TP linkage to work correctly.

John

It does have the right throttle linkage.

Ok, so it makes sense that the linkage must be out of adjustment, now walk me through this, but if I remember correctly.

To set the shift linkage, You start by engaging the throttle spring linkage on the carb and you push it all the way back. This engages the transmission shift linkage. Now with the carb fully engaged the transmission linkage should push the shift lever all the way back on the 727.

Am I missing something?

Mike

PS John thanks a bunch for helping me with this issue.

The TP linkage and the shift linkage have nothing to do with each other.

First, the aftermarket carb needs a special throttle lever adapter (#20-7 for a Holley and #1481 for a Carter/Edelbrock) even if the linkage is correct. This adapter sets up the correct leverage ratio.

The TP lever doesn't need to be full back at WOT, just near full back.
