Not gonna lie, tried posting this on the "Corners are best" but didn't have a single response. Maybe the guys that review that section are more the aftermarket race type, since I'm looking stock refurb thought I'd give this section a try.

Has anyone pulled a quick ratio steering box apart?

How difficult is it? I'm a little nervous but almost have myself talked into it after reading the service manual 5 times, How hard can it be??

Any special tools that HAVE to be purchased?

There is a master rebuild kit available from O'Reilly for $74 and appears to have all seals and retainer rings to completely rebuild. Are there other kits available that you would recommend. And is there any difference between a rebuild kit thats for a standard box Vs Quick Ratio? Wouldn't think so but thought I'd ask.

The car has not run since 1978 and appears to be operating smoothly (on bench removed from the car) am I best to only replace the cross shaft seal, worm shaft seal and ????? and call it good (at least it won't leak) and will likely operate just fine.

Finally is there a particular (correct) black paint I should use to refinish when complete.

Thanks for the help.

I believe the different internal parts to the T/A box are not serviced items. But if you go to http://www.hamtramck-historical.com . Barry lists a TSB on quick ratio that tells technicians the differences.

I've never rebuilt one. I need and want to. I'd think it would be easier than a automatic trans. Harder than a carburetor. Harder than assembling a motor.

My WAG and is it's about as hard as rebuilding a manual 4spd transmission. But that is a total guess and I've never rebuilt a manual trans.

Well I've rebuilt all of the above & the only one I send out to a pro these days is the steering box.... Technically it's very basic but for some reason I've never had any luck keeping the fluid inside.... I bought the special tools, I'd just rather send it to Firm Feel....And BTW the box ratio is the same as other boxes, it just has the internal limiter stops altered for the longer pitman arm....

What do the special tools comprise of?

So you can get them to work fine, but the just leak on you? Of course that's not acceptable, but something to keep in mind.

Is there a certain seal or area you had a problem with?

Special tools consist of spanner wrenches for the two nuts... After doing one with adjustable spanners & not having any luck getting it to not leak.. They seem to like to leak from the cover on top of the sector...

You bought the right spanners and you had the same leaking out of the top as you did with the adjustable spanners?

Yup... After working in a hydraulic repair shop I think I'd try machining it for a better seal design..

So you did the complete tear down, who did you use for seal kits?

Seems to me that the only two spots to get leaks are from the cross shaft and worm shaft seal, any other seals not functioning properly should only affect performance (not that thats acceptable either)

You mention leaks from the cover on top of the sector?? Are you referring to the valve body?

No, not the valve body, the domed cover that acts as the top support for the sector shaft.. I've had no problems with the valve body, the lower sector shaft seal, or the worm seal... The thing that looks like it should be trouble free has leaked on three separate steering boxes... If I had access to a test stand so I could pressurize the gear before installation I'd play around with one again but the trouble to bolt one into a car only to have it leak is more work than I care to go through... I'll go with sending it to Dick @ Firm Feel.. FWIW back in the eighties the seal kit was available through Napa for around $12...

Do they sell a kit with new bearings?

The only bearings are two B series torrington needle bearings that would be easily sourced either through an auto parts store or a industrial supply...

Has anyone pulled a quick ratio steering box apart?

This warning may/may not apply to this pump, but it could be worth reading. Go to:

http://wwnboa.org/askexpert.htm

and read Q/A #7 in the middle of the page. (There are two other #7's at the top and bottom.)

It's a very easy adjustment....
