After having spent weeks bodyworking and blocking the exterior bodypanels of the car at the shop with help of all the crew here.

We laid a couple coats of f8 basecoat to help us catch any small flaws before hitting the booth on saturday.

Man, it looks good.

I didn't know that other guys did this!
I have had a few projects that I suspected were ready for paint after countless hours of block sanding.....This tactic of laying on some shine to highlight flaws seemed a little wasteful to me at first, but I've grown to like it.
Did this car get your super frame connector design? I recall a thread in the cornering forum with pictures. Great idea and great work.

Yes, we like to do that. We thought this one was ready for the paint booth when looking at it in primer, but after some f8 paint we could still catch some flaws.

Some people say that doing this will cause paint adhesion problems afterwards, but that is not true, as long as you scuff the paint ENTIRELY once more after hitting the paint booth. Then you spray it with 2 more coats of base and then cleat and it works just fine!

Also we like to do it this way because since its all covered already with the right shade of basecoat then it's a lot easier to get full paint coverage. Even if it it goes a bit thin inside the paintbooth in a spot that doesnt get as much paint as others it will still show the right color even if it got a teeny bit less paint.

Looking good

I don't purposely do some base coat to look for flaws, but there's been a few times I didn't catch them til a car was getting painted.

When you find flaws after a couple of coats of basecoat how do you proceed?

Usually the flaws are so small that it only takes some blocking to fix them and then just lay some more basecoat on.

Or they can be minute scratches, so scuff some, then fill with some putty filler, sand down, and then baseoat again and continue checking.
