I bought a 70 RR...383 air grabber car last year and it came with a K&N air filter.I just bought a fram filter for it today which is the stock equivalent but it's about 1 1/2 inches taller than the K&N and of course now my hood won't close. My buddy that has the same car (no he isn't in town right now to measure the height of his) says I probably have a 440 baseplate. Can anyone tell me the depth from the cross- member on the 383 baseplate to the bottom?I think I'm sitting here with a 440 piece...this after I just restored it,primed, sanded and painted it...help!

Not sure of the measurement but sounds exactly right. B vs RB motor different base. I have a complete air grabber set up for a 71 RR and it is 383 only...or 400 I guess if you just wanted to.

You may have the wrong filter , a stock filter height is barely 3" and the 440 base is SHORTER than a 383 base because the 440 is taller than a 383 . You can put a 440 air cleaner on a 383 and close the hood , but you can't put a 383 base on a 440 without having an issue .

What intake do you have ?

IIRC when I had my 71 RR there was about 3/4 to 1" difference in height difference. Post a pic. My K&N filter element is the same height as a Fram CA 322.

I am truckless..

Your base plate sounds like its taller than the 383 version. Maybe dart4forte will chime in. He has my old 71 RR.

Your stock air filter is tall , I measure 3.5ish to the TOP of the crossbar on a 383 oval filter air cleaner I have.

I measured the air filter element in my unsilenced 69 air cleaner , which uses the same filter as the 70 fresh air, it's 2 5/8 overall.

The easiest way to tell a 383 from 440 base is to set the carb horn on a flat surface, if the outer seal edge is off the flat surface it's a 383 unit, if it touches it's a 440.

All bets are off if it doesn't touch and the carb horn has been cut , I have one of those too ...
