Thats a hard one nothing wrong with a mopar dizzy for you cam install two light advance springs it will want close to full advance to idle right! http://chucker54.stores.yahoo.net/disadweigspr.htmlNothing wrong with a unilite last one I worked on had adjustments for the mechanical timing slots. I run long slots with the lightest springs for ease of starting ("I just used mopar/mr gasket springs") . (Some like to shorten the slots and use stock or medium springs that too does not let timing fall away to keep idle smooth! The msd is fine but I find their advance springs are too stiff so again i fit mopar springs to it for more idle advance with big cams! You can buy this adapter kit to use a RB 413/426/440 dizzy in a 383/400 B http://chucker54.stores.yahoo.net/rbtobbldiad.htmlThat way you are set up if you ever go RB

Although I am not a fan of the unilite line,if you have a complete setup,I would use it. Try to avoid mixing different coils/boxes/distributors,if possible. You can get a car to run decent by mixing products from different brands but I am dynoing different combination of coils with different boxes and distributors and you can gain or lose a lot of power and and drivability if the combination is wrong. I can't give away too much info yet due to what I am testing for a customer, but I will tell you this much,MP boxes work better without an MSD coil. I can get a smoother torque curve and more overall power with an Accel coil, and even a stock electronic ign. coil. Switch over to an MSD box,and the opposite is true.Different distributors have some suprising effects with the other parts too. I need to call Rick at Firecore and get one of his distributors and see how it compares. Keith

I have to go along with the above post...Go with what you have. I had an MSD dizzy laying around for a 383. I called up MSD and told them I needed the shaft for a 440 and they wanted me to send it in. Somehow I suckered someone to sell me one. Put on the whole shebang from there...The MSD6-AL box, the timing control, and the MSD coil. When I put it altogether on the car (12 years ago) it was at the top of its game. The box, the timing control and the dizzy/cap/rotor are all still there and working along with the original plug wires. I am sure there are better and more cost effective units that have hit the market since then but I would use what I have

If it's a street/strip car, why not buy our Firecore ready to Run Distributor? It has a capacitive discharge ignition built right in it. plus, you can still maintain your stock cap if you wish. Dead-nuts timing all the way to 10k RPM.
Keith, please give me a call. We can discuss some options. Thank you for the interest. Rick

The Unilite will work. It has an adjustable curve, but you have to pull the dist apart to get at the advance. I also think the unilite is mechanical advance only with no vacuum advance? I run an old unilite on the 500" stroker, but it triggers a MSD box, so the electronics inside are not really seeing much current, so the electronics module does not get hot and it lasts a long time. I have an older Accel street billet dist on my 440 street car. It uses a magnetic pickup, has the built-in electronics, adjustable mechanical advance, and it also has vacuum advance. You may want to look at the FireCore Dist. It's pretty new. Not sure what the cost is on one though?

If you have difficulty going inside a regular dist by removing the clip then you may want a Mallory based MP unit with externally adjustable slots. You will be in & out of there several times if you want it spot on on the curve. #1 find your ideal initial w the vac gauge method then that tells you how much to shorten the slots. Could get it up & runnning with the points unit & you'll get the hang of getting the center clip in & out of there
Have you actually recurved one of these mallory based new MP units ?

No double R I have not but ain't that the main selling point of them is the easily adjustable slots . I have heard that touted multiple times & that was the basis of my recommendation.
No , the selling point is adjustable mechancial advance. You still have to take it apart to adjust and/or change the springs at least I couldn't easily see a way to do it without disassembly.

Oh OK so it must come apart to ch the springs but you can access the torx head screws for the mech adv without tearing it down. Now I got it. Thank you double R.

Ummm, sort of , you can get to the screws but when you rotate it to adjust the advance with the tool they sell you can't see the screw to tighten it.

I have an MSD E-curve. Should work well with big block. It has built in rev limiter, electronic adjustable vacuum curve and timing curves. Just pop the cap and turn the dials with a pocket screwdriver.
Just don't use thier soild state coil with it (won't run). And it's a tight fit with an A-body and small block.
I don't think they make one for a big block or I would buy that .
