I've got an original set of 1968 906 heads off my Super Bee that have never been apart. They have the 1.5 OD spring with inner damper spring. They also have a retainer that is slightly smaller OD than the spring. Is this wrong or unusual. I thought maybe the factory used a smaller retainer on top when the damper spring was used that reduced spring movement side to side. Anyone know for sure if the smaller retainer was or was not used on the 1.5" OD spring? I bought a set of 1.55 10 degree retainers from Mancini at the Mopar swap last week but the inner lip is too large and doesn't fit my spring. Thanks.

Nothing wrong with the retainers being slightly smaller than the spring.

Yes that is the stock retainer, retainers are sized to fit snuggly , almost snap , into the ID of the spring. It doesn't need to be the OD of the spring.

I was just surprised that the retainer didn't cover the spring. I looked at my 69 Bee, which does have the wrong heads the lopo 516's for an earlier 361/383, and they have retainers that cover the 1.5 springs but no dampers. I'm positive however about these heads for my 68 Bee never being apart. Just thought that smaller OD was odd. Thanks.

These are 1.33" OD compared to 1.50". With the damper springs I'm thinking that will allow for less movement side to side. Suppose that's why the factory did that.

I think you are wasting way to many brain cells trying to figure out why the factory did it.

Chew on this , it's cheaper to make a smaller part because it uses less metal , manufacturers are all about spending as little as possible to maximize profit .

Probably so. They added the damper spring so needed to retrieve that cost from something else.
