Do I need to seal the threads on my 3/8" oil pick up?

Yes NPT threads (which those are) require a sealant

Yes as long as you don't get any inside the tube. Tim

NPT threads do not REQUIRE sealant, but it is good insurance in this instance. The taper acts as the seal if made correctly. Tim

If you want to be extra cautious you can use some actual thread sealant.

I personally never used anything and have no pressure issues. Once spun in the tube gets very tight because of the taper.

I ran without sealant and had NO pressure issues at all...in fact pressue was ont he high side. When I recently re-did the oil pan/pickup, I added some thread sealer (red stuff) to make sure the pickup didn't twist out any as my motor is a stroker and the clearance b/t pickup and rotating assbly is tight! This was done to prevent the pickup from loosening, not to seal it...

I always used sealer and never had a problem.

It's added insurance and what does it cost? .001 Cents?

If the pickup is going to suck air past the threads it is going to do it when the oil is cold and thick and when your less likely to notice a problem on the gauge.

that'll work fine tho my preference is plumbers white paste (pipe dope) as it's thicker & I think seals better. Have you made your mind up yet

while sealer can be used, a NPT joint requires a thread lubricant ( teflon tape and such are thread lurbicants, not sealers) they enable you to accurately torque a NPT joint as the tapered threads sometimes stop short of sealing without proper lubrication.

Me too, for over 40 yrs of screwing them in until tight, no problems ever Why risk getting the tape or sealer into to the pump

Hand tightened as far as it would go with out stressing the neck and there are approximately 3 threads still visable. Any cause for concern?

You want to make sure it is tighten all the way you can get it, I use a crescent wrench on one of the straight pieces to tighten them, that or a pipe wrench Once you have it tight, install the oil pan and pull the drain plug so you can check the hieght of the pickup off of the bottom of the oil pan with a flashlight or a piece of 1/8 inch welding rod or a straighten out coat hangar, the Mopar factory services manuals call for the stock pick up to touch the bottom of the oil pan
