I want to re-install my rear-end so I can roll my car around. I have everything but the center section (Have 489 case, no guts). Will I damage my axles with out the chunk if I roll her around?

I don’t think I would do it. What’s going to support and keep the inside end of the axle centered?

You could put a lenth of 2" steel tubing inside the rear housing where you can slide the axles in to support them. I think you'll be alright with that, but you could also use some wood wedges to secure/center the tubing into the empty bearingcaps.

get a section of plastic pvc pipe and slide it over the axles in the center. and as long as your not running down the road at 30 mph it'll be fine

plan on replacing the bearings regardless

As a general rule or from the axles supported w PCV pipe & being moved around

I would just as a general rule if moving it around with no lube and/or support on the bearings themselves

my idea is just to keep the axles from flopping around and should not be used to move the car any farther or faster than you can by hand

Something to consider, the pipe idea is ok if your running Green bearings but the OE tapered bearings need a spacer in the middle to force the axle out so the bearing cone seats in the race... At the very least you'll destroy the seals running it with just a pipe...

There will be some weirdness if still using stock adjustables.

This is incorrect. the weight of the vehicle forces the axles out. Its a glorified front wheel bearing setup.
The pipe deal is fine.

You might want to take another look at the design of Mopar axle bearings before posting that comment...

I stand corrected my apologies. But with the pipe in there I can't see it damaging anything, the bearing can only go in so far....?
As far as mopar bearings, I was thinking about the grand cherokees.

Without some sort of solid spacer to push the axles out the taper of the bearing tends to push the axle in.. The first the that tries to stop the inward movement is the outer axle seal meeting the larger step on the axle so that grease seal gets destroyed.. It can't be serviced without removing the bearing so now the bearing is toast... Next thing to try stopping the axle moving inward will be the axle flange meeting the axle retainer... If your pushing the car the axle flange will grind away at the retainer.... Honestly probably wouldn't do allot of damage but why chance it....
