Decided to remove the oil pan from an engine that is in the garage sitting for over 20 years. Its a used engine and I found the oil pump p/u is filled with fragments of the valve stem seals.

How common is this?

Which type and year engne are you working on? The first oil pump failure I had in a Mopar was in a 1957 Chrysler 300C, a piece got through the strainer locking up the oil pump shearing the oil pump shaft That was 500 miles from home If it is a small block you may want to look up inside the pickup and see if there is a hole in the center of the screen like all the early Mopar V8 motors had

Completely normal for a 40 yr old engine, heck I see it in 10 yr old engines. Rubber valve seals just dont last forever.

Take care,
